The Automotive Engine Repair Technician Certificate of Achievement prepares students for careers in engine mechanical diagnosis of internal combustion engines and the diagnostic processes that go along with servicing/repair of internal combustion engines for import and domestic passenger vehicles and light trucks. Coursework includes training in modern internal combustion engines, variable valve timing, variable lift, engine construction, overhaul, and engine diagnostics. This certificate prepares students for careers such as Automotive Engine Mechanical Technician (Heavy Line Technician) or General Automotive Technician at privately‐owned repair shops, corporately owned repair shops, or manufacturer dealerships. The Automotive Engine Repair Technician Certificate of Achievement is part of a stackable sequence of awards that builds upon the Automotive Technician Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement and culminates in the General Automotive Technician Certificate of Achievement.

This certificate of proficiency is intended to help students develop knowledge, skills, and resources in the areas of financial management, legal considerations, product and service operations, and personnel management associated with starting and running a small business.

The program in business management at Irvine Valley College prepares students to enter management positions in the public and private sector in such areas as retail, wholesale, trades, banking, import, export, and government. The curriculum includes lower division courses that are transferable to four-year colleges and universities for those intending to pursue a baccalaureate degree.

The Retail management certificate program, designed by managers of major retail corporations, prepares individuals to be effective managers or to be promoted to management in the retail industry. Retail experience is a plus but is not required to successfully complete this program. Courses assist students in understanding the scope of the retail manager’s job and the requirements for success. Completion of the certificate enhances the student’s opportunities for entry-level employment as well as advancement in a variety of retail careers. The Western Association of Food Chains (WAFC) has endorsed this program. Current grocery industry associates are encouraged to contact their Human Resources office for details on the WAFC program.

The Meeting and Event Management program focuses on the planner’s practical “need to know” tools and skills. Learn from well-known experienced industry professionals who are eager to share the practical “need to know” tools and skills essential to every successful meeting and event planner. Attain a solid understanding of the myriad details and behind-the-scenes considerations needed to assure your meeting or event is the success you and your clients hoped for.

Convenient online and weekend classes are designed to provide a dynamic learning experience with extensive interaction between students and instructors-through case studies, real-life examples, group work and hands-on activities. Special features include “behind the scenes” visits to hotel meeting facilities and development of a hands-on project.

Program Outcome

✓ The outcome for the certificate of achievement is to prepare students for employment within the hospitality, travel, and tourism industries as a meeting, convention, or event planner.

The Medical Assisting program includes specific business and clinical courses that prepare students for employment as clinical and/or administrative assistants in medical offices, clinics, or in related medical and business fields. The coursework can be completed in two semesters, and includes on-the-job experience in a medical office or ambulatory care center.

Orange Coast College is accredited by the Accreditation Commission of Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Such accreditation permits graduates of this program to take the California Certified Medical Assistant examination (CCMA) immediately upon graduation. The California Certifying Board for Medical Assistants has been administering the CCMA exam since 1990. CCMA is one of three Boards that is recognized by the Medical Board of California. The medical assisting profession is highly diversified, and the work is challenging and personally rewarding. Employment opportunities are excellent in the expanding healthcare field.
