Certificate of Achievement Level 3 in Dental Assisting

Registered Dental Assisting Programs are designed to instruct women and men with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform as dental health care paraprofessionals. Students are taught to assist in all phases of general dentistry and dental specialties including prosthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, and pediatric dentistry. Through the Registered Dental Assisting Program students will be taught to perform in expanded functions, trained and licensed in taking dental x-rays, certified in coronal polishing and pit and fissure sealants. The preventive, restorative, business, and employment aspects of dental assisting are also included.

 

Upon completion of the Program students will be eligible to take the California State Board Examination for licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant (R.D.A.) and the Dental Assisting National Board Certification (C.D.A.).

 

The Registered Dental Assisting Program at San Jose City College has full accreditation status from the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association and is approved by the Dental Board of California.

 

Students are admitted to the program in the fall and spring semester. Advisory Level 2 Basic Language Skills are critical for entry into DENT 151, 152, 153,154, 155 and 156 as well as all other Dental Assisting courses. It is recommended that students planning to enter the program take the placement test as early as possible to determine their level. Those needing to improve their language skills may do so in courses offered by the college prior to admissions to the program.

 

Costs of uniforms, books, safety items, and miscellaneous supplies are estimated at $1,000-$1,500 for the 11 months of the program. Costs are spread out over the 11 months. Approximately $600 is needed at the start of the program.

 

Students develop laboratory skills in role-playing situations with mannequins on campus and are assigned to dental offices in the community to develop clinical experience and receive training in a professional working environment. Students are responsible for their own transportation to clinical facilities. Students are required to work 120 hours full time during the Summer Internship rotation. Students should have current certification in C.P.R., provide proof of a Negative TB Test as well as current vaccinations Hepatitis B before entering the second semester.

The Dance Teaching Certificate of Achievement – Level 1 will prepare students for teaching dance at private dance studios or community programs. Upon completion of the certificate students will be proficient in three or more dance technique styles at the intermediate level, have a firm understanding of dance pedagogy, dance appreciation and music theory, and be competent crafting movement classes and dance choreography.

 

The Dance Teaching Certificate of Achievement course of study recommends a sound foundation of ballet, jazz and modern dance technique. Certificate of Achievement in CSU GE-​Breadth - Level 3

The Certificate of Achievement in CSU GE-Breadth is a program that provides students with the option of fulfilling all lower division general education requirements before transferring to the California State University (CSU) system.

 

Students who intend to transfer must meet all current lower division CSU GE-Breadth requirements including minimum GPA. Students may also request certification of their general education upon completion of this Certificate of Achievement. The Certificate of Achievement will appear on student’s transcripts, but the certification is a separate request. It is the student’s responsibility to submit it to their transfer institution. Students are strongly advised to meet with a counselor to discuss transfer requirements and lower division major preparation that is needed for their intended transfer university.

 

Although the certificate recognizes the completion of lower division CSU GE-Breadth requirements, it does not guarantee admission to a specific campus within the CSU system nor does it guarantee admission to a specific major.  Some majors and colleges may require a different lower division preparation and/or a higher GPA than is necessary for this certificate.  A grade of “C” or better is required in all courses.

San José City College offers a certificate and Associate in Science degree in Cosmetology. The Cosmetology Program is designed to provide those persons interested in becoming a licensed cosmetologist with instruction in technical and theoretical knowledge relating to the basic skills in all phases of cosmetology including current salon techniques and trends. Emphasis is placed on application of skills in hair coloring, permanent waving, chemical relaxing, hair styling, hair cutting, manicuring, skin care, facials and makeup. Instruction in professionalism, salon management, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, sanitation, Cosmetology Act, rules and regulations are included.

 

The Cosmetology Program is composed of 1600 hours of instruction, to satisfy the requirements of the California State Board of Cosmetology. Once a student is admitted to the Cosmetology Program the student must enroll on a full-time basis (40 hours a week). The program offers a Certificate of Achievement, as well as an Associate in Science Degree. Upon completion of the certificate program, students are eligible to take the State Board Examination for licensing. The program is intended to prepare students for Cosmetology entry positions i.e., hairstylist, facialist, and manicurist.

 

Candidates for the Cosmetology Program must file a supplementary application. Applications are available in the Cosmetology Department C101A. Orientation meeting attendance is required prior to enrollment. A grade of “C” or better is required in each major and certificate theory and lab course. Candidates who successfully complete the applicable degree requirements may be granted an Associate in Science Degree in Cosmetology.
