The Healthcare Interpreting (HCI) Certificate of Achievement program is designed to prepare bilingual and bicultural individuals to serve in a professional interpreter role and in a dual-role interpreter capacity within their regular scope of practice. The goal of the program is to develop linguistically and culturally competent interpreters and qualified bilingual staff to function effectively and efficiently in a variety of settings, serving culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

 

Through academic preparation, skills practice labs and internship in the field, students learn social, cultural, medical, and linguistic skills that support the health and well-being of patients and clients, and of multidisciplinary teams at worksites. Professional healthcare interpreters and qualified bilingual staff are sought after by a variety of employers, such as health systems, educational systems, marketing and research firms and freelance agencies. This program meets the state and national standards, ethics, protocols and practices, and prepares students for national healthcare interpreter certifications. Up to four different languages are offered each year depending on the number and diversity of the applicant pool. Upon completion of the certificate and the HLTH 84 course, students would have completed a minimum of 375 hours of education and training.

All students will be trained in core competencies essential for success in the field, and have the opportunity to select courses that address specific health issues and communities. The San Francisco Department of Public Health accepts the certificate of achievement to satisfy six out of twelve months of experience that is required as a minimum qualification for hiring as a Health Worker 1-3.
