Sogetsu Ikebana is offered in cooperation with the Sogetsu Ikebana, Soho Study Group, Ikebana International, Japan Ministry of Education, The American Institute of Floral Designers, San Francisco Bay Area Master Florists Association and California State Florists Association.

This two-year course of study is designed to give students thorough and well-balanced training in buying flowers, and the art of arranging in the Sogetsu Style.

This curriculum satisfactorily qualifies individuals to teach Sogetsu Ikebana on a private level.

The course of study includes instruction in beginning, intermediate and advanced levels of the Sogetsu curriculum under the guidance of experienced instructors. Students who complete the curriculum and other graduation requirements receive the Environmental Horticure/ Floristry, Certificate of Accomplishment-Sogetsu and qualify the student to apply for a level 5 Sogetsu School Certificate.

A major reason for studying the Italian language is the enrichment of one’s intellectual growth in the context of the rest of the world. In learning Italian one also learns about the culture, philosophy, and civilization of another people, thereby broadening understanding of the world. On the practical side, any field of specialization (journalism, medicine, law, business, teaching) is enhanced if one can speak another language. In California, knowledge of a modern language is now required in many jobs that deal with the public such as Civil Service, social work, nursing, and other service-oriented fields.

Policy Statement Regarding Sequence of Enrollment in Italian Language Classes

Although students are advised to enroll in language courses sequentially, they will not be precluded from enrolling in lower level language classes after completion of more advanced courses. Students should be aware, however, that units resulting from the lower level courses may not be accepted at transfer institutions as a part of the required transferring units.

Skills Certificates are an acknowledgement that the student has attained a specified set of competencies within a program. Skills Certificates require less than 18 units and are shorter in duration than the Certificate of Achievement. The Italian Skills Certificate provides a way for students to verify that they have reached a level of proficiency in the Italian language.

Skills Certificates may be part of a “ladder” of skills, beginning with job entry skills, or may constitute a skill set that enables a student to upgrade or advance in an existing career. Skills Certificates require less than 18 units and are shorter in duration than the Certificate of Achievement. This is the starting point for all those interested in environmental science. The program leading to this certificate introduces students to the major areas of environmental science, provides the basic background necessary for analysis and solution of environmental problems, gives an overview of some of the most important problems in Marin and provides direct contact with people solving them. It is designed to be completed in two years. It can be added to a College of Marin AA/AS degree to improve transferability to bachelor’s programs in environmental science. It can also be earned apart from any degree to show mastery of the basics of the field of environmental science and to increase the diversity of job options in the field.

The Floral and Special Events Coordinator curriculum is designed to train floral design students to execute all details necessary to create a variety of events, such as seminars, conferences, trade shows, executive retreats, incentive programs, golf events, conventions, weddings, and other special occasions with an emphasis on floral decorations. Topics such as conducting a consultation and developing a client proposal and contracts specific to the floral industry and the financial aspects of floral events will also be covered.

The program of study for this certificate is designed to give students both broad and specialized training for entry-level employment in sales work and in various kinds of horticultural production or to add to their capabilities in nursery and garden-center operation.

🗸 Identify and describe plants that are common to nursery and garden center operations.

🗸 Propagate and apply horticultural care to produce saleable plant materials.

The program of study for this certificate is designed to give students both broad and specialized training for entry-level employment as maintenance gardeners or to add to their capabilities in landscape maintenance including preparation for State and Civil Service examinations for the position of maintenance gardener.

This certificate is designed to give students both broad and specialized training for entry-level employment in landscape construction or to add to their current capabilities in order to create a business in landscape construction.

🗸 Operate landscape construction and maintenance power equipment to construct landscapes in a safe manner.

Students who satisfactorily complete the curriculum in Commercial Cut-Flower and Greenhouse Production, a two-year course of study, receive the Associate of Science in Commercial Cut-Flower and Greenhouse Production and are qualified for employment in the cut-flower and greenhouse production industries in the following capacities: cut-flower grower, groundskeeper, flower shipper, plant propagator, plant salesperson, and potted-plant grower.
