This Certificate of Achievement in Administration of Justice provides students with foundational, practical, and theoretical knowledge in the main components of the American criminal justice system, and prepares students for entry-level positions in a wide range of criminal justice occupations including law enforcement, courts, corrections, and private security.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

• Describe the history, structure, and functions of the main components of the American criminal justice system.

• Analyze principles and applications of California and Constitutional law, particularly the requirements adhered to by law enforcement, courts, and corrections.

• Produce written communications that meet the professional standards of the criminal justice system.

• Analyze critical contemporary problems and issues within criminal justice nationwide crime rates; prison population and buildup; the costs of incarceration; and individuals killed by police

• Implement investigative and forensic skills, techniques, and procedures in a variety of practical settings.

This certificate meets the education requirements for the associate teacher level of the Child Development Permit Matrix issued by the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and Community Care Licensing, Title 22 requirements for a fully qualified teacher. After meeting additional experience requirements, graduates are qualified to apply for a Child Development Permit, which is required to work in federal and state funded programs for children aged 0-5.

To earn a certificate of achievement, students must complete each course used to meet a certificate requirement with a “C” grade or higher. Attending classes in the day, the evening, or both can complete certificate requirements.

The Administration of Justice program provides students with the legal, ethical and educational background necessary to pursue a career in a criminal justice-related field and/or to successfully transition into a four-year academic program. The program prepares students for successful completion of the California Peace Officer Standards and Training and Department of Corrections academies. The program also supports administration of justice professionals by providing staff development opportunities and promotional pathways.

A certificate of achievement may be earned by completing all the courses required for this major with a grade of C or better.

The Journalism program is strongly committed to providing each student with the journalistic skills, ethics and educational background necessary to pursue a career in the journalism profession and/or to successfully transfer to a four year university program. Students acquire these skills and this knowledge through a combination of instructional and experiential learning strategies. Through these two strategies students acquire an ethical framework for making decisions that produce unbiased stories of merit.

Program Learning Outcomes:

- Effectively judge the “news value” of information concerning events and issues in contemporary society for the reading, viewing and listening public.
- Gather news and other information according to the ethical guidelines of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Canons of Community College Journalism.
- Write (photograph, video, design, etc. - depending on their specialty) news, feature and opinion articles (photographs, video segments, page designs, etc.) that adhere to basic standards of accuracy and clarity, and in the style dictated by the Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual.
- Apply their journalistic skills, ethics and decision-making abilities to performing their journalistic duties in media when they transfer to four-year universities and as media professionals.

The certificate of achievement program in technical theater prepares students for an entry-level career in community and professional theater. Based on the principle of total immersion in the theater, students are engaged in every technical aspect of bringing the live theater experience to the audience. Intensive, hands-on experience is gained through supporting drama productions presented in the DVC laboratories, the Performing Arts Center and the Arena Theater, or as interns at local and regional theaters. Careers may include backstage crew, scene shop technician, scenic painter, property artisan, theater electrician, costume technician, makeup technician, sound/projection artisan, or stage manager.
