This certificate of achievement program prepares students for entry-level careers as law enforcement officers in federal, state, and local agencies, as well as in private and corporate security. After completing this certificate, students enrolling in a POST police academy will have a solid foundation that will help to ensure their successful completion and high achievement in the academy. Students entering private security will attain the knowledge, skills, and training to be successful and effective in these careers. Completion of this certificate will also improve opportunities for employment and provide for advancement and promotion for those currently employed in these fields.

To earn a certificate of achievement, students must complete each course used to meet a certificate requirement with a “C” grade or higher. Certificate requirements may be completed by a combination of day, evening, or weekend courses listed in the Administration of Justice (AJ) Program. Successful completion of coursework for this certificate counts towards the requirements of the certificate of achievement in the administration of justice.

Students wishing to pursue a career in the field of law enforcement, crime scene investigation, probation, parole, corrections, private security, law, criminal behavior studies, rehabilitation programs or the like should consider this twoyear program. All students planning to seek employment with a government or private agency after they graduate should speak with a faculty member of the department in order to review the special requirements of the various agencies.

To earn a certificate of achievement, students must complete each course used to meet a certificate requirement with a “C” grade or higher. Certificate requirements can be completed by attending classes in the day, the evening, or both.

This certificate will help students prepare for a future in mechanical drafting and design as an entry level mechanical drafter and will prepare students for continuation in the Digital Design Graphics Technology Program. Upon successful completion of the required classes for the Mechanical Drafting and Design Certificate, students will be prepared for employment in entry level mechanical drafting, design, and related fields. Students will have the ability to communicate successfully using industry standards and terminology. Students will be able to create detailed 2D drawing plans based off of 3D models and create physical 3D printed prototypes using the latest release of the Autodesk AutoCAD, Inventor, and Fusion 360 software.

This is a comprehensive four-semester certificate that enables a student to be employable as an entry level design drafter and three-dimensional (3D) artist with the versatility to work in a wide range of drafting and 3D graphic fields. The Digital Design Graphics Technology program is also an Autodesk Authorized Training Center (ATC) which ensures that students are always taught on the most current releases of the various Autodesk software programs used in their coursework.

This certificate will help students prepare for a future in architectural drafting and design as an entry level architectural drafter in the residential and commercial building industry using Building Information Modeling (BIM) and will prepare students for continuation in the Digital Design Graphics Technology Program. Upon successful completion of the required classes for the Architectural Drafting and Design Certificate, students will be prepared for employment in Architecture, Construction and Engineering Fields as Drafting Technicians, Designers, Building Information Modeling (BIM) Coordinators, or BIM Technicians. Students will have the ability to communicate successfully using industry standards and terminology and successfully create 2D drawing sets based off of 3D Building Information Models using the latest release of the Autodesk Revit Architecture software. Students will have the ability to communicate successfully using industry standards and terminology and successfully create 2D and 3D drawing sets using the latest release of the Autodesk AutoCAD software.

The addiction counseling certificate provides students with the academic preparation needed for employment in the addiction counseling field. Upon completing this certificate, a student may apply for any of the state recognized professional credentials offered by the following organizations: California Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (CAADAC), California Association of Alcohol and Drug Educators (CAADE), and the California Association of Addiction Recovery Resources (CAARR). Each of these certificates has additional testing and/or field practicum hours required, but all of the educational coursework is completed when you finish the addiction counseling certificate at DVC. To earn a certificate of achievement, students must complete each course used to meet a certificate requirement with a “C” grade or higher. Required courses are primarily available in the evening and late afternoon. Although students may start during any term and progress at their own pace, completion of the certificate will take approximately four terms.

The addiction studies certificate is for students who want a specialized focus in addiction, treatment and recovery but are not preparing to become an addiction counselor. This certificate may be useful for teachers, human services personnel, or community service personnel who want to have a deeper understanding of the addiction process.

Important note:  Once this certificate is completed, if you choose to continue in the addiction studies program, you may apply these units towards the more in-depth addiction counseling certificate. When a student has enough units to earn either certificate, they need to fill out an “application for a certificate” form during the term in which they will complete the units. This form must be picked up and turned in to the Admissions Office. If the form is not filled out, a student will not receive the certificate from the college even if they have completed all the units.

The Law Enforcement Certificate provides students with a concentrated program of study in the Criminal Justice system. This certificate does not meet the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements related to the Basic Police Academy.

The Addiction Studies certificate program is designed for students pursuing employment as a Certified Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counselor, also called Certified Addictions Treatment Counselors (CATC’s), in the State of California. AOD Counselors help individuals deal with substance abuse and dependency issues. The program follows the standards for CCAPP which certifies educational programs. It incorporates the Addiction Counseling Competencies published by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse Treatment Administration (www.samhsa.gov).

- Understand the composition, physical and cognitive effects, addictive factors, and symptoms of withdrawal and overdose of commonly abused substances.

- Assess accurately persons using substances by identifying risk factors and behaviors to facilitate appropriate prevention, treatment, and referrals in the community.

Successful completion of the Bookkeeping Certificate program will provide the skills necessary for an entry-level accounting clerk or bookkeeping job.
