A student completing the Engineering Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement will gain a solid grounding in the basic principles that underlie all engineering disciplines. This certificate provides both academic preparation for and a pathway to internships. When combined with further study, it will lead to the Engineering Associate in Science Degree and/or transfer. This certificate is intended to be completed at the beginning of a student’s course of study, while they are at the freshman level. As such, it prepares a student to enter most sophomore-level engineering and STEM support courses. This certificate is specifically designed to encourage and guide students to select their courses in a sequence which enables them to transfer as fast as possible. Recommendations based on majors are as follows:

🗸 Civil or Mechanical Engineering majors: Engineering 5 AND Chemistry 1A

🗸 Computer or Software engineering majors: Computer Science 1 AND Computer Science 2A

🗸 Electrical engineering majors: Computer Science 1 AND (Computer Science 2A OR Chemistry 1A)

Skills Certificate in Basic Welding

Welding Technology is an integral part of all industries that require the fabrication, maintenance, and repair of metal structures. The Welding Technology program at Cabrillo is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in welding and fabrication-related industries, which include agriculture, construction, manufacturing, marine technology, and transportation. Interested students can pursue Skills Certificate options, continued education/re-training and qualification testing for those currently in welding-related trades. In addition, American Welding Society certification testing is available. 

 

Program Learning Outcomes

✔ In SMAW, perform and pass a standardized AWS qualification test on 3/8" steel plate in the flat and one or more welding positions other than flat using an E7018 class electrode.

✔ In GMAW, perform and pass a standardized AWS qualification test on 3/8" steel plate in the flat position and demonstrate consistency in performing single pass welds on sheet steel all positions.

✔ In GTAW, perform and show consistency in welding of steel, stainless steel and aluminum sheet stock in all positions and the welding of steel tubing in the 2G and 5G positions.

✔ Students will demonstrate skills in joining sheet metal by means of soldering, riveting, spot welding, and forming metal locks. In addition students will be able to develop a variety of patterns to form sheet metal components and transitions.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

UPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THIS PROGRAM, STUDENTS SHOULD BE PREPARED TO:

- In SMAW, perform and pass a standardized AWS qualification test on 3/8" steel plate in the 2G, 3G, and 4G welding positions using an E7018 class electrode.
- In GMAW, perform and pass a standardized AWS qualification test on 3/8" steel plate in the 2G, 3G, and 4G positions.
- In GTAW, perform and show consistency in welding of purged steel, stainless steel, and aluminum pipe and tubing in all positions.
- Students will demonstrate consistency in welding of steel pipe with the SMAW and GTAW methods in all positions and pass standardized AWS qualification testing of pipe weld coupons.
- Students will demonstrate consistency in interpreting blueprints, selecting and cutting metal stock, drilling, forming and preparing of parts; assembling, tacking and welding of components, and finishing of projects.

The Musical Theatre Certificate of Achievement is designed to prepare the student for basic performance competency in the field of Musical Theatre specifically: vocal control in character, legit and belt styles, physical characterization and movement, acting, analysis of music and text and public performance. Additional classes in acting, dance and singing are highly recommended. Career opportunities for students with the Musical Theatre Certificate of Achievement include professional company entry-level positions, work with youth theater companies and work under city/county government programs. Many youth programs include musical theater presentations. Students who successfully complete this certificate may be qualified to work as an actor on stage and in the entry-level positions of assistant to the director, musical theater acting instructor/coach, and assistant to the choreographer.

The Latin American and Latino/a Studies Certificate of Achievement is designed to prepare students with training helpful in advancing career goals in an increasingly diverse society and provide background knowledge helpful to students who pursue advanced studies in Latin American and Latino/a Studies and related fields. The course of study centers on exploring the historical processes, social structures, political dynamics, and cultural expressions of people living in Latin America and those from Latin American backgrounds living in the United States. The program is interdisciplinary and exposes students to a broad spectrum of academic fields including the social sciences, arts, and humanities. Certificate requirements are fulfilled by taking foundational courses in sociology and history and a range of additional courses drawn from art history, dance, film, history, literature, philosophy, political science, sociology, and women’s studies. It is designed for students who wish to pursue a specialization in Latin American and Latino/a Studies and professionals working in private, public, and non-profit settings who work with or wish to learn about Latinos in the United States to further their career goals.

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging Certificate of Achievement is a one-year post-primary Magnetic Resonance Imaging program for the working Radiologic Technologist. It provides a path to eligibility for the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) advanced modality examination in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Students must hold current ARRT certification in Diagnostic Radiography (R) to enroll in the program.  These certified MRI Technologists will be able to produce quality diagnostic images to support the healthcare needs of our local and regional communities. They will also advance in the medical imaging profession and increase their earning potential.
