The Construction Project Management Certificate of Achievement is designed for students that want to pursue management-level careers in the construction industry. Students will learn the business and operational methods that are unique to modern construction such as estimating, planning and scheduling, business practices, and technical writing. This certificate provides the knowledge and skills necessary to seek higher management positions, such as but not limited to, foreman, superintendent, scheduler, estimator, and project manager. This multifaceted program focuses on the technical, managerial, and communications skills that are required to be a successful project manager.

The Construction Plumbing and Mechanical Inspection and Codes Certificate of Achievement is structured for students who are establishing their skills in the plumbing and mechanical heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) trades. This certificate focuses on specialized knowledge of plumbing and mechanical codes and compliance. Students awarded this certificate will be employable as plumbing and mechanical contractors, code and standards specialists, code compliance consultant, quality control officers, and/or building officials for plumbing/mechanical systems.

✔ Demonstrate understanding of the basic plumbing, mechanical codes, and building standards in residential and commercial structures.

The Construction Management Certificate of Achievement provides education in the areas of management, inspections and skills (hands-on) training. Students will find employment in the broad spectrum of opportunities available in the construction industry. The program also provides continuing education, degrees, and certificates for those already employed as contractors, owner/builders, inspectors, managers, supervisors, estimators, planners and schedulers, support staff, craft workers, and other areas related to construction.

The Kinesiology and Athletics Department provides opportunities for students to participate in activity classes, pursue a professional career, transfer and compete in intercollegiate athletics. A variety of activity courses are offered to meet the interest and needs of all students as they fulfill the general education requirements, Kinesiology graduation requirements, certificate requirements or their desire to maintain lifetime fitness. An Associate of Arts Degree with three options of study-Education, Sports Management and Sports Medicine- as well as a certificate program for personal training are available. The AA degree can be obtained by completing a total of 60 units, which includes the 18-24 unit major, general education requirements and electives. The personal training certificate can be obtained by completing a total of 18-19units.

These programs are designed to allow students to transfer into baccalaureate programs in kinesiology or related areas. Professional fields include teaching, coaching, athletic training, physical Therapy, exercise physiology, motor learning, sports management, sports psychology and personal fitness training. These careers could provide employment with education institutions, commercial health clubs, private/public fitness and sports centers, recreation departments and sports teams. Gavilan College offers a variety of intercollegiate sports for men and women. We compete in the Coast Conference which is a member of the California Community College Athletic Association. Students participate for a variety of reasons, including the desire to compete at the intercollegiate level and for the opportunity to earn an academic or athletic scholarship at the 4-year level.

The credit ESL Program offers all levels of ESL courses ranging from basic to advanced in the areas of listening, speaking, grammar, reading, and composition. The program provides language skills for students with a variety of goals, from personal enrichment to academic preparation for students who want to pursue higher education in college instructional and/or vocational programs.

In learning the English language, students learn to communicate in areas important to their personal lives, interact with native English speakers, read and understand the main ideas of a text and the supporting details that illustrate them, understand the rules and use of different grammar structures, and write about a topic with support and clarity.

Students in the ESL Program come from a wide variety of educational, cultural, and native language backgrounds and contribute that richness to the study of English as a second language. Because of the multiple factors involved in learning a language, progress varies from student to student. The program provides a sequence of courses that challenge students to review and expand skills previously learned in an atmosphere of intensity, professionalism, support, and respect. We take pride in our students and in our program.

The Construction Business Management Certificate of Achievement empowers students with the essential knowledge and skills to manage the business components within the construction industry. This certificate focuses on business skills that are unique to construction management and operations. Students may pursue this certificate to better understand construction finance, risk management, resource allocation, cash flow, credit, contracts, and the numerous other details to be a successful construction business professional. This certificate can lead to employment in various occupations such as, but not limited to, office manager, records administrator, estimator, and contracts manager.

The Building Inspection and Construction Codes Certificate of Achievement establishes a foundation for students to develop the necessary abilities and skills to read plans, conduct inspections, and interpret codes. Students will be better prepared to pursue industry-recognized certifications and entry-level jobs in the building-inspection sector. Topics covered include energy management, sustainable construction, and all regulations related to structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and energy codes.

Building inspection is a growing industry with numerous entry-level opportunities for students with academic and industry credentials. This certificate prepares students for employment opportunities such as: plans examiner, permit technician, compliance officer, and building department staff in private and public sectors. This certificate gives students the foundation to advance to other certificates and associate’s degrees.
