The Child Development Program is an academic and vocational training program that prepares students for future work as early childhood educators in diverse early childhood settings. Courses and certificates are designed to meet entry-level requirements for the level of work chosen and/or meet the requirements needed to obtain a California Child Development Permit to become an Assistant Teacher, Associate Teacher, Teacher, Master Teacher and/or Site Supervisor in state-licensed, publicly funded, center-based child care and development programs. Students planning to transfer to a four-year university as child development or related major may be able to apply some child development units toward the lower division major preparation requirements or qualify for the AS-T in Early Childhood Education. This certificate prepares future, early childhood educators, to direct and supervise an early childhood development program; provide care, education and instruction of children in an early childhood development program; and serve as coordinators of curriculum, instruction and staff development.

This certificate fulfills course requirements to qualify as a director in an early childhood development program licensed by the Department of Social Services. It also meets the course requirements for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Site Supervisor Permit.

This certificate prepares future, early childhood educators, to work with diverse children in early childhood settings. The program includes academic instruction, job skills training, and field experiences. Students develop skills in integrating developmentally appropriate practices in teaching young children and acquire abilities in building relationships with children and their families.

This certificate fulfills course requirements to qualify as a teacher in an early childhood development program licensed by the Department of Social Services. It also meets the course requirements for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Child Development Teacher Permit and Child Development Associate Teacher Permit.

This certificate is awarded upon completion of the core and support courses and 24 units of general education courses (at least one course from each of the following categories):

The Certificate of Achievement in Digital Marketing, created in collaboration with Facebook Inc., is designed for people who are seeking to learn the latest marketing tools to promote a business or an organization online. The program provides 25 units of online instruction and hands-on practice in creating marketing content, understanding basic elements of building a website, employing search engine optimization, developing online ad campaigns, and analyzing key performance metrics.

Generally, entry-level or advancement to levels of middle-management and upper-management in business requires at least a bachelor's degree in Business. There are numerous opportunities in the domestic and international arenas. Careers in marketing, sales, advertising, personnel management, accounting, finance, market research, business advisory, and risk management. Additionally, opportunities for the development of new small businesses are also available through our program.

Medical schools, healthcare employers, and biological research organizations specifically seek out candidates with an understanding of how issues of diversity impact their work. These organizations and employers understand that attending to diversity is critical for patient health and for excellence in research. This certificate provides a pathway for biology and health science students to gain certification in diversity, equity, inclusion, and service in their fields, such that students are more competitive for transfer and job applications. In earning the certificate, students will complete their major biology courses for their field alongside at least one service-learning course focusing on service in bio/health fields.

Program Learning Outcomes

- The biology majors sequence prepares students to use the scientific method to formulate questions, design experiments to test hypotheses, interpret experimental results to draw conclusions, communicate results both orally and in writing, and critically evaluate the use of the scientific method from published sources.

- The biology major sequence prepares students to apply evolutionary theory at the molecular, cellular, organismal and population levels to explain the unity and diversity of living things.

The Art History program offers an Associate in Arts degree and a Certificate of Achievement and provides students with an awareness of art, economic, political, religious, and social history. Students leave the program with increased sensitivity to art-related issues and the ability to think critically about art and art history. Knowledge of art history engenders a heightened understanding of history, a familiarity with the major issues in human cultural development, and exposure to the artistic expression of varied cultures and civilizations. This guided program assists students in developing specialized art theories necessary to apply and transfer to art programs at local universities.

Career opportunities include the following: college professor, teacher, arts administrator, museum/gallery curator, corporate art advisor, museum docent, a consultant on historical style for film and TV production, museum conservator, historical conservationist, art critic, tour guide, travel consultant, research assistant, and art dealer.

The studio art program empowers students to learn diverse perspectives and practical portfolio-art skills for transfer into art schools and university studio art programs. The Associate in Arts degree and Certificate of Achievement offers a range of beginning to intermediate level ceramics, digital arts, drawing, life drawing, 2-D and 3-D design, painting, and art theory. Our equitable schedule of courses is offered on weekdays, weeknights, weekends, face-to-face, virtual, hybrid, and online to fit students' needs.

Students will be able to:

- Create two- and three-dimensional artwork using drawing, design, ceramics, and/or digital tools, materials, methods, and techniques.

- Create artwork that communicates diverse cultural and personal perspectives, and the human condition.

- Analyze and assess diverse historical and current two- and three-dimensional works of art as it relates to art and theory.

- Translate concepts and visual experiences into images, tactile, and digital forms.

The Associate in Science in Steamfitting & Pipefitting Technology degree program is conducted in partnership with the Pipe Trades Training Center apprenticeship program. The apprenticeship program is five years in duration, requiring a minimum of 9,000 hours of on-the-job training. After 5 years of classroom instruction and paid work experience, students are recognized as journeypersons within the Pipe Trades industry and work to protect our environment by properly installing and maintaining piping and equipment for complex heating and air conditioning and special industrial piping systems.

The apprenticeship program, which includes coursework, lab work and on-the-job training, involves learning about the assessment, installation, maintenance, and repair of different types of pipe systems, effective and safe tool use, material applications, related mathematics, and science and storage. The Associate in Science in Steamfitting & Pipefitting Technology degree builds on the Certificate of Achievement in Steamfitting & Pipefitting Technology by adding requirements for general education courses and electives.

Students are admitted into the Pipe Trades Training Center apprenticeship program based on obtaining a passing (75%) score on the Pipe Trades Entrance Exam, which measures the student's ability in math and mechanical reasoning. Students who pass the entrance exam are selected from an applicant waiting list, the order of which is established by the date the entrance exam was taken and the test score.

- In compliance with applicable standards and codes, students will demonstrate the ability to install and remove piping and equipment for complex heating and air conditioning applications and special industrial piping systems, such as those used in semiconductor, biotechnology, and power generation facilities.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be employable as Foreman, General Foreman, Superintendent, Project Manager, Estimator, Detailer, Building Trades Inspector, Building Trades Instructor, and/or a Union Business Agent/ Business Manager in the semiconductor, biotechnology, power generation, healthcare, education, water treatment, and food and beverage processing industries. Students earning an associate degree will increase their marketability and employment opportunities. Admission to apprenticeship courses is limited to apprentices registered with the California Division of Apprenticeships Standards, according to the California Labor Code, Section 3074.3.
