This certificate, when combined with completing the requirement for an AA/AS degree and appropriate work experience, enables the student to be able to apply to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing for a Child Development Permit at the Site Supervisor level and also enables the holder to apply to be a California Mentor Teacher. The Associate Teacher Skills Certificate allows the student to work as a fully qualified teacher in a private early care and education (Title 22) program, serving infants/toddlers, preschool-age children, and school-age children in before-and-after school programs. Once the unit requirements for this certificate are fulfilled, it is recommended that students meet with a Human Development full time faculty member on how to obtain an Associate Teacher Permit through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. With the Associate Teacher Child Development Permit, an individual can work as an assistant or associate teacher in a publicly funded (Title 5) early care and education program. Throughout the curriculum, students delve deep into the intricacies of anatomy, physiology, and emergency medical procedures, gaining a comprehensive understanding of critical concepts essential for effective patient care. From mastering cardiology and respiratory care to trauma management and pharmacology, students develop a diverse skill set tailored to meet the demands of real-world emergency scenarios.


Built upon a foundation established in previous Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training, this program elevates students to advanced paramedics. They acquire proficiency in advanced techniques such as airway management, EKG interpretation, medication administration, interosseous (IO), and intravenous (IV) therapy, essential for managing complex medical emergencies with precision and efficacy.


Structured as a 34-unit program, our Paramedicine program is divided into three immersive phases of training:

✔ Didactic Phase: Engage in stimulating lectures and hands-on skills training sessions, laying the groundwork for advanced medical knowledge and practical expertise.

✔ Clinical Experience: Immerse yourself in real-world healthcare through supervised in-hospital internships, working closely with experienced clinical preceptors to apply theoretical learning in a practical environment.

✔ Field Internship: Take your skills to the streets as you embark on supervised shifts with active paramedic units. Under the guidance of seasoned paramedic preceptors, gain invaluable hands-on experience responding to emergencies and providing life-saving care in dynamic, fast-paced settings.


To enroll in this program, applicants must have completed HSCI 02 or an equivalent EMT course and hold certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), as well as California state certification. Additionally, current certification in CPR from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.


For the degree, students must fulfill the following major requirements with grades of “C” or better, complete a minimum of 60 degree-applicable semester units (12 of which must be completed at Sierra College) with a grade point average of at least 2.0 and complete one of the following three general education patterns:


✔Sierra College Associate Degree Requirements;

✔California State University General Education Breadth pattern;

✔Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC).

The purpose of this proposal is to help prepare the Sierra College student for an entry-level Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) position and to help advance the careers of those already in the field who have received noncredit training and/or non-degree educational preparation thus far. The need for the program is based on the demand by employers (both public and private) and on the increased level of college education and training required for entering or pursuing any career progression in the field.  The California State EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Authority has maintained that state EMT licensing meet the standard of care requirements of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and the US Department of Transportation (USDOT). The National Standards requirement for EMT certification is recognized for reciprocal certification in 48 states. A certificate provides career technical skills; it is not equivalent to an associate degree.

Designed for students to gain a solid foundation in GIS theory and related technologies, such as GPS and remote sensing. Sequence of courses build upon each other to provide hands-on technical skills demanded of the professional workforce, culminating with a professional map portfolio and repertoire of spatial analysis skills. Opportunities for interns and entry-level positions are abundant, provided students learn industry-standard software, GPS skills, database management and mapping design. Students must choose from additional courses, such as computer-aided design (CAD), database management, computer programming, surveying, spatial analysis and are encouraged to participate in an internship.
