PREREQUISITE: Students must have EMT-Basic Certification and have a current CPR card for BLS Healthcare Provider issued by the American Heart Association and it must remain valid for the duration of the EMS-011 class. ADVISORY: Eligibility for ENGL-100 Provides training and knowledge required for Recertification for Emergency Medical Technician I as outlined by the State of California. EMT Certification is the minimum requirement for ambulance attendants and is a prerequisite for the Paramedic program, as well as most entry level firefighter positions. Content includes review of: (1) basic life-support measures; (2) cardiopulmonary resuscitation; and (3) use of emergency medical equipment and supplies. Twenty-four hours of continuing education for EMT-B. EMT certification is the minimum requirement for ambulance attendants and is a prerequisite for the Paramedic program and most entry level firefighter positions.

This course is instructed in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) National EMS Education Standards (DOT HS 811 077A, January 2009), and is approved by the Contra Costa County - Emergency Medical Services Administration (Title 22) and the National Registry of EMTs. The Family Development Worker Certificate of Completion is a noncredit certificate that provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to support, advocate for, and guide families to set and achieve goals for self-empowerment.  Successful completion of this certificate will provide the preparation necessary to earn the National Family Development Credential.  A credentialed family development worker may be employed as a case manager, social work assistant, family support worker, child advocate, or parenting educator in diverse human services settings.

The Sustainable and Organic Food Production Certificate of Achievement prepares students to become good horticulturists through the understanding of organic and sustainable food production, in ground organic agriculture, and controlled environment agriculture. Students learn about the process of organic certification, laws and regulations, managing soil health, organic practices for pest management, planting schedules, and cover cropping. Students explore controlled environment agriculture practices such as hydroponics, substrate production, aquaponics, and greenhouse environments. The certificate also explores sustainability practices and water use.

The Certificate of Achievement in Photography is designed to prepare students for transfer into commercial art, graphic design, or the fine arts fields, such as the Photography BA at SFSU, or the Graphic Design BA at SJSU. The certificate is designed to help you be able to show an emphasis in photography that may not be reflected in your Certificate of Achievement in Graphic Communications, AA, or transfer degree. This program can empower you to develop your artistic vision through photography and with three courses, you can complete this certificate and have it to show potential employers or transfer institutions in 1-2 years.

The Mushroom Cultivation Certificate of Completion is a noncredit certificate designed to introduce the cultivation of various mushroom species, including fungal biology, historic uses of fungi, and basic cultivation methods. Also covers advanced mushroom cultivation including sterile techniques, spawn production, substrate selection, substrate manufacture, inoculation techniques, and fruiting room requirements. May be offered in a distance-learning format.

The Landscaping Certificate of Achievement prepares students to become good horticulturists through the understanding of site-appropriate plant selection, correct plant identification, proper maintenance and pruning techniques, and the relationship between irrigation and the soil. Students will incorporate these skills into developing sustainable and aesthetically pleasing urban spaces, parks, and commercial and residential landscapes.

Students study horticulture and soil science; plant materials; landscape design, construction, installation; pest management; irrigation design and installation; computer-aided design; and industry business practices.

The Berry Production Certificate of Completion is a noncredit certificate designed to introduce students to strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry production. Gives an overview of crop biology, physiology, site preparation, water quality, plant nutrition, and production careers. Students will learn plant health issues and diagnosis, organic and inorganic fertilizer calculations and mixing, irrigation management, irrigation monitoring systems, pruning basics, physiological problems, use of high tunnels, food safety, and harvest scheduling.
