The Inside Wireman program consists of a comprehensive course of study necessary for career success as an Inside Wireman. This program is intended to meet the "whole program status" as required by the Department of Apprenticeship Standards. Graduates will have acquired the knowledge and skills needed to function as an Inside Wireman, including foundation sciences, mathematics, safety, plan and code reading, as well as necessary job based skills. Upon completion of required work experience and hours, graduates will be qualified to take the State certification examination and work as an Inside Wireman. Career opportunities for a qualified Inside Wireman in the constructions trades are very diverse. Depending on the student's career interest and courses taken, graduates find employment as an Inside Wireman in commercial, industrial, and residential areas, voice data video technicians, fire/life safety technicians, or non-residential lighting technicians.

The Residential Wireman program is offered in partnership with Santa Clara County Electrical Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee. This 3-year apprenticeship program provides students with paid on-the-job training and in-class instruction with no tuition fee. The students will learn how to install and connect electrical systems in homes, condos, and apartments, and how to maintain basic electrical and power distribution systems within a residential environment.

Program Learning Outcomes

🗸 Students gain hands-on experience as they work on electrical systems and component wiring to include: power distribution systems, electrical panels, wiring, conduit, piping, test equipment, transformers, motors, grounding, over-current protection, security, solar, and home automation systems. These specialized skills are acquired through on-the-job training and classroom instruction and lead to employment in the construction and service industry. After five years of classroom and work experience, students who pass the state license exam are recognized as journeypersons in the electrical trades industry.

🗸 Residential Wireman students will be able to identify the tools and the materials used in residential wiring, to calculate values using Ohm's Law in D/C series, parallel, and combination circuits, to identify architectural and mechanical symbols on residential drawings, and to read and analyze blueprints, diagram structured wiring systems.

Career Opportunities

Upon completion of all course requirements and 8,000 hours of related work experience for Inside Wireman, graduates will be eligible for the State certified Electrician Examination. Depending on the student's career interest and courses taken, graduates find employment as an Inside Wireman in commercial, industrial, and residential areas, voice data video technicians, fire/life safety technicians, solar and photovoltaic installers, and non-residential lighting technicians.

The Air Conditioning Mechanic program is offered in partnership with Sheet Metal Local 104 and Bay Area Training Fund. This 5-year apprenticeship program provides students with in-class instruction and paid on-the-job training with a sheet metal contractor, in the service sector of the sheet metal and heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) industry. The students will perform scheduled maintenance and troubleshoot system problems while dealing directly with a variety of customers. The students utilize understanding of refrigerant, electronic and pneumatic controls, filtration and duct systems to maintain safe and efficient system performance. Mechanics use test equipment to verify conditions, research manufacturer's data, and then adjust, repair, and replace components as needed. Sheet Metal Air Conditioning Service Mechanics work on residential, light commercial, and, more often, complex commercial systems. Upgrade training is common in this occupation as more advanced and "greener" equipment is produced. Per California Code of Regulations, this program is limited to students admitted to the Sheet Metal Local 104 & Bay Area Industry Training Fund's Air Conditioning Mechanic Program.

The Associate in Science in Air Conditioning Mechanic degree builds upon the Certificate of Achievement in Air Conditioning Mechanic by adding requirements for general education courses. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to receive an Apprenticeship Completion Certificate from the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS). The graduates will be employable as HVAC Service Technician/Mechanic; HVAC Service Manager; HVAC Contractor; NATE Certified Air Conditioning Mechanic; Test, Adjust & Balancing Technician; Building Inspector; foreperson; estimator/detailer; contractor; instructor; project manager; and other related occupations.

The MS program in Psychological Research is designed to provide both broad and specialized education in the field. With an MS in Psychology, one can prepare for employment in positions similar to those associated with a Bachelor's, although at a higher level of responsibility. Completing a MS may also prepare the student for doctoral studies in Psychology. Applicants to the MS program should first determine their sub-disciplinary area(s) of interest represented among our faculty and identify desired mentors based on match in research interests to serve as their faculty advisor before submitting an application. The Graduate Brochure contains the department application procedures.

In our MS program, students complete a culminating project; this is typically a thesis which is an original research paper of publishable quality. Students are matched with a faculty advisor that supervises their research and provides professional development opportunities. Advisors play an active role in students’ planning and research process from the start. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with their faculty advisor on a continual and intensive basis as soon as they begin their studies in the program. Through this relationship and cooperative research units, students can prepare for employment or doctoral study in any area of psychology related to/represented within our program faculty’s areas of expertise.

With a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, graduates can qualify for positions requiring an understanding of human behavior in public service, education, or business. The undergraduate Behavior Analysis Certificate qualifies students for positions requiring the application of behavior analysis in educational settings and health and human service agencies.

A unique interdisciplinary program that spans the combined areas of Political Science and Journalism.

The University's association with the Washington Center makes it possible for California State University, Sacramento students to undertake an internship in Washington, D.C. There are many opportunities for Government-Journalism majors to do an internship to meet their unique interests through this program.

Note: Political Science and Journalism majors should have both an advisor in the Political Science Department and a Journalism Advisor in the Communication Studies Department.

Minimum Grade Requirement
Majors must complete each required lower and upper division Journalism course with a grade of "C-" or better.

The Political Science major complements a student's liberal arts education with an emphasis on understanding the theoretical and practical aspects of government and politics. The department offers a BA in Political Science, a BA in Political Science-Journalism, and the minor in Political Science. The Political Science major is structured to provide students with a comprehensive background in the basic fields of political science, as well as to permit them a range of choice in completing the program. The Political Science Department offers several courses integral to interdisciplinary programs such as California Studies, Environmental Studies, Ethnic Studies, Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies, and Women’s Studies.

The department emphasizes its expectation that students seek faculty advice when planning their program. Students may ask any faculty member's assistance initially. As specific interests are developed, students may wish to seek the advice of faculty sharing their interests.

The International Relations major complements a student's liberal arts education with an emphasis on understanding the theoretical and practical aspects of government and politics with a focus on global politics. The International Relations major is structured to provide students with a background in the basic fields of political science with an emphasis on the fields of Comparative Politics and International Politics, as well as to permit them to take supporting courses in a range of other disciplines with foci on politics and cultures in regions outside the United States and in the international system.

Minimum GPA Requirement
Students are required to maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA.

Women’s and Gender Studies is a dynamic interdisciplinary field preparing students to be future leaders, scholars, and social justice activists. We are dedicated to studying the social production of gender and women’s experiences in relation to formations of sexuality, race, class, nationality, ability, ageism, and other categories of difference. Scholarship and research in Women’s and Gender Studies emphasize the importance of connecting what students learn in the classroom to political projects and personal experiences.

Our curriculum empowers students to be agents of change in their communities and society. It provides them tools to examine relations of gender in local, national, and global contexts. Our courses situate gender within specific historical and cultural contexts, allowing students to examine how our lives are shaped by social and economic institutions, political movements, and individual experiences. “Putting Theory into Practice” since 1971, we place a strong emphasis on community involvement and activism, and we offer many opportunities for internships and service work credit.

The sociology major and minor have few specific requirements, allowing the student flexibility in selecting courses in the various subject areas covered in the program. The areas covered are:

1. social theory and methods of inquiry;
2. advanced studies, such as family, immigration, education, politics, religion, sport and environment;
3. thematic areas of crime and deviance, diversity and inequality, socialization and interaction, globalization, and social change.
