The Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology provides students with a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of human movement, a strong foundation in the natural and social sciences, and the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare students for careers in fields such as physical education, athletic coaching, athletic administration, corporate or commercial wellness, older adult fitness, athletic training, and other physical activity related professions.

The BS in Kinesiology offers five concentrations designed to meet students’ specific academic needs and career interests in the areas of Physical Education Teacher Education, Athletic Coaching Education, Athletic Administration, Physical Activity and Wellness, and Athletic Care.

The major in Exercise Science qualifies an individual for career possibilities in cardiac rehabilitation, sports medicine, chiropractic, athletic training, geriatrics, health related fitness programming (fitness and corporate), and further scientific training in graduate school.

The Health Fitness/Strength Conditioning Specialist Concentration is designed for students who are interested in advanced scientific knowledge of how physical activity, exercise and sport alter health and human performance. Many students from this option pursue careers in fitness and corporate wellness, strength conditioning, and further their scientific training in graduate school.

The Bachelor of Science program in Health Science prepares students for a variety of roles within the allied health professions. The curriculum integrates coursework from disciplines across the University to provide students with a broad foundation of knowledge and skills related to life sciences, social sciences, communications, health ecology, public service, ethical practice, and data analysis.

The curriculum is designed to provide students with the necessary prerequisite courses to pursue careers or training in clinical or non-clinical practice professions after graduation, such as Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Physician Assistance, or Public Health. The curriculum also prepares students to transition to clinical majors at Sacramento State if they wish. Students have the flexibility to select a program of study that suits their career goals within the allied health professions.

Cannabis Studies Associate in Arts Degree

The Cannabis Studies AA degree is grounded in Social and Behavioral Sciences, with a multi-disciplinary approach including sociology, biological psychology, and anthropology. Coursework focuses on both theoretical and applied perspectives surrounding cannabis and its use. It provides a unique examination of the constructions of cannabis as a product, a psychoactive substance, a behavior, and a form of deviance. It incorporates an applied approach through the lens of the business of cannabis. It also uses a social justice framework to analyze public policy, rhetoric, and health. Cannabis Studies is a gateway degree for students seeking transfer in related disciplines, specifically Anthropology, Psychology (and neuroscience), Sociology (and Social Work), Public Health and Criminal Justice. Cannabis is on a trajectory to be a multi-billion dollar industry before 2030. An Associate Degree in Cannabis Studies can lead to good jobs in the industry. According to a 2019 Whitney Economics Cannabis Jobs report, the cannabis industry is the largest single job creator in the country. In 2019, the cannabis workforce grew by 44%, creating more than 64,000 jobs in all areas of the industry. This degree requires 19 units in the major in addition to other graduation requirements.

Astronomy Associate in Science Degree

The Astronomy Associate in Science Degree prepares students to transfer to CSU/UC and obtain a baccalaureate degree in the following majors: astronomy, astrophysics, or physics. This degree may also support admission to research internships and attempts to gain entry-level employment within the field, such as observatory and planetarium operations. This degree requires 20-21 units in the major, in addition to other graduation requirements.

Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice

Criminal Justice encompasses multidisciplinary examinations of crime, crime control, the justice process, and justice institutions. The discipline addresses definitions, causation, prevention, investigation, legal process, treatment, rehabilitation, and research relating to crime and justice as well as the institutions of the justice system and their administration.

The Criminal Justice program at Sacramento State is one of the most highly sought after programs in Northern California. Due to the large number of applications, the program is now officially impacted. Students wishing to become Criminal Justice majors must complete a series of required lower division courses and then must apply for admission to the program. It is highly recommended that interested students speak with a Criminal Justice advisor as soon as possible.

Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders

In addition to obtaining a 2.0 in the overall 53-56 unit major, a student must achieve an overall average 2.5 GPA in the 40 units of required CSAD major coursework in order to graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. In order to achieve these GPAs, students may repeat  courses for which grades of C- or below were earned, contingent upon their eligibility to do so under the campus policy on repeating courses. Repeated course grades will either be forgiven or averaged with the new grade according to the campus policy on repeating courses. Students must complete the major prerequisites before beginning courses in Communication Science and Disorders.

Undergraduate courses are designed for students to begin in the fall semester and progress in a proscribed sequence.

It is strongly recommended that students:

Take a course in physics and/or chemistry as some programs offering the Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Sciences and Disorders will require it.
Finish all Undergraduate General Education units before beginning major coursework.

The Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer (A.A.-T in Spanish) prepares students to move into the CSU system leading to a baccalaureate degree in Spanish. Please consult a counselor regarding specific course requirements for your transfer institution. Completion of the AA-T in Spanish degree also provides guaranteed admission with junior status to the CSU system, although does not guarantee admission to a specific campus or major. Upon completion of the Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer (A.A.-T in Spanish), students will have demonstrated success in introductory courses in Spanish including speaking, listening, writing, and reading. This knowledge will be evidenced by a wider understanding of basic historical and cultural aspects of Spanish speaking countries. In addition, students will have the capacity to write and think in a critically analytical way about issues pertaining to the diverse manifestation of the Spanish language throughout the world.

Associate in Science in Science Degree - Physics Emphasis

The Associate Degree in Science is designed to provide students with a foundation in science that will allow transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a baccalaureate science degree in disciplines such as astronomy, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, geology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, or physics. For transfer with upper-division standing, most four-year institutions require a minimum of one year of calculus and one year of general chemistry in addition to the courses required in the science major. Check with the Santiago Canyon College/Santa Ana College Transfer Center or counselor for specific transfer requirements. Units used to satisfy the Santiago Canyon College/Santa Ana College general education requirements may also be used to satisfy the Science Degree requirements.
