The program is designed to prepare a graduate with the entry-level skills and knowledge needed to assume the role of a registered nurse and succeed on the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN). The graduate employs assessment, clinical decision-making, caring interventions, communication, teaching and learning, collaboration, management of care, and professional behaviors consistent with contemporary nursing practice. Graduates practice in hospitals, clinics, and extended-care facilities and may continue their nursing education to the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels through various educational articulation options. Students applying for this program must take an admission exam, complete 14 hours of pre-requisite general education coursework, and be formally accepted. Admission selection is competitive and is based on a point system. Program application and details of the admission process and point system are available from the Nursing Program. A new class is admitted twice each year, and the deadline for program application is March 1 (fall admission) and September 1 (spring admission).

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is an essential member of the modern healthcare team as they work in close cooperation with physicians and practitioners to establish valuable diagnostic information as well as monitor the effectiveness of treatment. MLT’s have this capability through direct examination and analysis of patient specimens like blood and body fluids.


An MLT is able to perform testing in all areas of the lab such as blood bank, hematology, microbiology, and chemistry; moreover, there are specialized departments like molecular genetics, virology, and even some in forensics analysis. Jobs are available in hospital settings, outpatient or physicians’ offices, reference laboratories, and also in product/sales positions.


Our curriculum is an integrated program of theory, basic concepts and technical procedures providing hands-on skills practice, paired with a clinical experience practicum at an affiliate laboratory. Upon successful completion of the MLT Program, a graduate will be qualified and eligible to take a national certification examination with American Society for Clinical Pathology-Board of Certification (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB). Any of the certifications can lead to licensure with the state of Tennessee, and other states requiring licensure. This AAS degree does allow for career ladder advancement by gaining experience in clinical work while furthering your education with a bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science.
