The AS Degree in Earth Science prepares students with the skills needed to succeed in entry-level technical positions in the geological profession, including such fields as geologist, earth scientist, conservation scientist (land use), environmental scientist (environmental assessment and mitigation, including air & water quality analysis), mining, hydrology, agronomy, or serving as a lab tech. Completion of this coursework will also help students complete the coursework needed to transfer to a 4 year and obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Earth Science or Geology which will provide additional professional opportunities. Chicana/o Studies is the study of the diverse Chicano/Latino community in terms of their social, cultural, historical, political, educational, ecological, and health experiences and social movements. The goal is to develop academic, career, and leadership skills to improve the conditions of the Chicano/Latino community, support the cultural and educational projects within the community, and raise awareness and commitment to equity and social justice. The Chicana/o Studies Associate in Arts is designed to create a transfer pathway to the Chicana/Chicano Studies major at UC Davis, but this degree can also provide useful skills and knowledge to students who are interested in careers in education, social work, public service, community development, the arts, and natural resources. Most career options require more than two years of college study. Students who plan to transfer should consult with a counselor to ensure all transfer requirements are met outside of the major.

This degree covers all aspects of drinking water treatment, drinking water distribution and wastewater treatment. Topics covered will include drinking water sources, water quality/contaminants, water sampling/testing, drinking water treatment techniques, drinking water regulations, record-keeping, safety, customer relations and local government basics. The degree also covers drinking water distribution system installation and maintenance of pipes, valves, meters, fire hydrants and storage tanks. Wastewater classes will cover wastewater collection, sampling/testing, pre-treatment, advanced treatment techniques, effluent disinfection, sludge/effluent disposal, regulations, laboratory procedure and administration. This degree is designed to prepare students to take mid-level operator certification exams through the state of California to become water and wastewater operators, which is the first step for working in the water/wastewater utility industry. The Associate in Science in Drinking Water and Wastewater Technology prepares students to become supervisors and managers at water districts and water treatment operating companies.

Economics is the study of how the individual or society allocates scarce resources to satisfy unlimited wants. The Associate in Arts in Economics for Transfer is designed to prepare students for a seamless transfer into the CSU system to complete a baccalaureate degree in Economics or similar major. For economics majors with the goal of applying to CSU as well as UC, there’s a lot of overlap in coursework; students who are applying to UC should opt to take both MATH 1A and 1B. Students completing a bachelor’s or more advanced degree in Economics may find employment as market researchers, educators, budget analysts, statisticians, economists, or government or banking employees.

This degree will provide students with the skills and abilities necessary to obtain employment in the bakery, restaurant, and hospitality industry. The industry includes restaurants, hotels, casinos, bakeries, and many other food service establishments. Students will learn food safety and handling, recipe conversions, equipment selections, French techniques for pastry and dessert components, and a variety of modern cooking methods and techniques in one of our culinary facilities. The Culinary Arts Associate of Arts prepares students with the skills to be the future Line Cooks, Lead Cooks, Sous/Executive Chefs, Restaurant Managers, and Foodservice Business Owners in the food service industry. This program gives students the complete culinary skillset to be successful in entering the industry with an accredited culinary degree.

Chemistry is the science that studies the composition and properties of substances and the changes they undergo. The Associate in Science in Chemistry for Transfer (AS-T in Chemistry) is designed to allow students to complete the first and second year requirements to transfer to the California State University campus in Chemistry or a related major. Students with a degree in chemistry may pursue careers in a variety of fields such as pharmacy, medicine, engineering, teaching, biotechnology, patent law, and forensic science.  While at least a baccalaureate degree is recommended preparation for those considering professional careers, completion of this curriculum will demonstrate commitment to the field and provide comprehensive preparation for further academic study through upper-division coursework. For chemistry majors with the goal of applying to CSU as well as UC, there’s a lot of overlap in coursework; students applying to UC will be expected to complete multivariable calculus and differential equations.
