Statistics is the study of data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation. Statisticians summarize and visualize data in meaningful ways, test hypotheses, estimate unknown quantities in the population, and predict unknown outcomes based on available data.

The Statistics B.S. prepares you (i) to summarize and visualize data, (ii) to analyze data to address research objectives, (iii) to communicate results clearly and effectively in both oral and written forms, (iv) to understand the role of the profession in service of society, and (v) to work in interdisciplinary environments.

 

Program Learning Outcomes

MLO 1: Mathematical and Statistical Theory

Based on mathematical foundations, students demonstrate the ability (i) to interpret theoretical statistical statements, (ii) to communicate statistical ideas using mathematical language, and (iii) to address research questions using statistical theory.

MLO 2: Statistical Methods

Students demonstrate the ability to follow the statistical investigative process to formulate an answerable research question, collect, manipulate, and explore data, and analyze and conduct inference via statistical models.

Students demonstrate the ability to manage and manipulate data and perform statistical computations using appropriate programming languages or software in order to answer a research question.

MLO 4: Statistical Practice and Communication

Students demonstrate the ability to communicate with collaborators effectively and respectfully. Students are able to adjust their use of language depending on the collaborators’ backgrounds, to practice ethics (particularly for human-subject data), to understand (or reformulate) a research question (or a project goal), and to implement appropriate statistical methods. Students are able to produce an informative report, both written and oral, which is easily readable by the target audience. Students engage in ethical reasoning and public action through their profession to promote social justice and equity.

You will attain an advanced level of proficiency in Spanish according to the criteria of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages(ACTFL) guidelines.

MLO 1 Language Proficiency

Students are able to communicate effectively in Spanish in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational, and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Advanced Low level of language proficiency, according to ACTFL Guidelines

MLO 2 Linguistics

Students develop their knowledge of fundamental concepts in the fields of Hispanic and Applied Linguistics, and are able to apply them in the completion of research papers and data-driven small-scale research studies pertaining current issues in these areas.

MLO 3 Literary and Cultural Knowledge

Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions), and the cultural products - both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) - of Hispanic societies.

MLO 4 Secondary Culture Other than Hispanic Cultures

4.1 Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of Hispanic cultures with a second culture other than those.

4.2 Students will analyze and make connections between the perspectives, ways of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of a second culture other than Hispanic cultures.

MLO 5 Cultural Internalization and Language Immersion

Students demonstrate that they have actively immersed themselves in authentic Hispanic cultural and linguistic environments and have internalized the language and cultural experience, from which they have developed personal understanding and new perspectives of Hispanic communities.

Note: Students develop intercultural communication skills and strategies, and learn to adapt and respond in effective ways. This MLO may be fulfilled by a study abroad experience or equivalent. Courses taken in a study abroad program may count toward another MLO. Students who choose Pathway 2 will be working on a community project to fulfill this requirement.

MLO 6 Research and Technology

6.1 Students gain knowledge of appropriate research methodologies and are able to apply them in their studies.

In the Social & Behavioral Sciences major, you will gain knowledge and skills that are necessary for solving many of the world’s most pressing social problems.

We integrate seven social scientific fields of study to help you understand the full range of tools social scientists may use to develop innovative solutions. There is no direct entry BSN program at CSUMB. All entering students must be graduates of an Associates Degree in Nursing program (ADN) and hold a current California Registered Nursing license.  Students will be awarded 20 units of nursing credit for successful completion of the NCLEX.

The B.A. in Music is a hands-on program that prepares students for careers in performance, composition for acoustic and electronic/interactive media, sound engineering, audio programming, and music education, across commercial, independent, and community sectors: Music students produce concerts, mixes, musicals, scores, performances, sound installations, texts, talks, electroacoustic compositions, and interactive and experimental multimedia work in a variety of collaborative, independent, and cross-disciplinary projects. Courses develop skills and experience in all aspects of music making, including producing, performing, analyzing, composing, songwriting, mixing, editing, documenting, marketing, and programming.

Rooted in the liberal arts tradition of critical, interdisciplinary thought and practice, the degree emphasizes well-rounded musicianship through a balance of experience in performance, composition, musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory, acoustics, and music technology - each characterized by its own ways of thinking and doing - complemented by rigorous, fundamental training in critical listening, sight singing, keyboard skills, and the fluent reading, writing, and digital engraving of Common Western Music Notation. Beyond these fundamentals, students craft a personal, inquiry-driven degree emphasis in response to a chosen research and creative agenda, leading to an ambitious scholarly-creative capstone thesis project in a chosen area of expertise.
