Certificate Program

The Food Industry Management Program offers courses emphasizing leadership and management aspects of the food industry. Completion of the program is acknowledged by a Food Industry Management Certificate awarded by the University.

To qualify for admission and a scholarship grant for the food industry management program, students must be currently employed in a management position in the food retailing, wholesaling or manufacturing industry and recommended by their employer. Also, they must have completed at least 64 undergraduate units (or have completed a bachelor's degree) with an academic standing adequate for admission to USC.

To earn a certificate students must complete 18 required units during this one-semester program.

This Healthcare Interpreter Certificate prepares students to become effective English-Spanish interpreters in medical settings, following the standards of practice established by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care, the International Medical Interpreters Association, and the California Standards for Healthcare Interpreters. The Certificate is available to all students (including Extended University) who meet the language requirements. Students must successfully complete the five required courses with an overall average grade of B- or better. Topics to be covered include different modes of interpretation (simultaneous, consecutive, sight, and whispered interpretation), medical terminology, standards of practice, roles of the interpreter, ethics, and cultural competency. Courses with a SPAN prefix taken within the certificate also count as electives towards the major or minor in Spanish. Courses can be taken in any order.

This Certificate contains all the necessary elements to meet the eligibility requirements to take any of the nationally recognized certification exams (by the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, or by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters).

The goal of this certificate is to prepare students to work as professional translators able to translate general, specialized, and literary texts from English to Spanish and vice-versa. The Certificate Program is open to all students with an intermediate- to high level of proficiency in Spanish. Students must successfully complete the five required courses with an overall average grade of B- (2.7) or better. Topics to be covered by coursework in the Certificate Program include translation theory, translation techniques and strategies, information literacy, and translation of general, specialized, and literary texts. Courses can be taken in any order except SPAN 420 and SPAN 450, both of which require  SPAN 320 as a prerequisite.

The Certificate in Guitar at California State University Channel Islands is designed to prepare individuals for a career as a professional guitarist working in a diverse range of musical styles. Courses specifically focus on sight-reading music, technique, music theory, fretboard knowledge, ear training, music history, repertoire, and proficiency in many musical genres including jazz, classical, blues, rock, funk, and other popular musical styles. For students with no prior guitar experience, it is strongly recommended that MUS 202 : Group Guitar Lessons be taken before beginning the Certificate in Guitar. The certificate will culminate with a recital/lecture or a CD recording project in their senior year.

The Certificate in Guitar is unique because it combines extensive study of guitar with important theoretical knowledge in music. Through individual private lessons in guitar, guitar ensemble classes, audio recording classes, and music fundamentals and theory courses, students learn how to take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it to their instrument. Upon completion of the certificate, students will have the training and skills to become a professional guitarist.

Potential careers for a certificate in guitar alumni include: private guitar instruction, live music performance, studio guitarist, sideline musician, class guitar teacher, music fundamentals and theory teacher and assistant studio engineer.

Become part of a community of like-minded students interested in international service and the betterment of all people by joining CSUCI’s Peace Corps Prep program. You will also earn a Peace Corps Prep certificate from the United States Peace Corps. Even if you don’t apply to the Peace Corps, this experience will prepare you for global, national, and even local careers in service, education, business, health, and intercultural relations.

Peace Corps Prep

PC Prep is a certificate program that will help you acquire the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to serve in the U.S. Peace Corps. The program will also increase your competitiveness in the job market by expanding your global awareness and by providing experiences that will give added value to most careers after the Peace Corps or even if you do not choose service in the Peace Corps. You’ll build four core competencies through interrelated coursework, hands-on experience, and professional development:

1. Training and experience in one of six work sectors
2. Foreign language skills
3. Intercultural competence
4. Professional and leadership development

Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate from the Peace Corps and a competitive edge when applying for Peace Corps service.
 

We are on the cusp of an amazing era of change for our society and planet; the opening millennium of the Anthropocene and the opening century of the Earth’s sixth mass extinction event.  At the same time, we are in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution which has helped birth a new era of robotic instruments, individualized manufacturing, the open-source movement, and crowd-sourcing.  Students interested in both of these threads can complete our Environmental Technologies Certificate and work to harness some of these new technologies to help begin to respond to the daunting challenge of these cumulative threats to our biosphere. 

This program leverages a deep network of experts, exponential science and technology, and entrepreneurship to help bring new conservation innovations to scale and to provide novel and cost-effective data to managers on the front lines of our resource challenges.  Graduates will be extremely qualified for positions as entry-level field technicians, aerial and underwater drone pilots, sales, and program managers in both private and public sectors. 

The Certificate in Chemistry is designed to provide individuals who have already obtained a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in another discipline with the opportunity to obtain a certificate for advanced Chemistry coursework.
