The Certificate of Achievement in Occupational Safety and Health is designed to provide students with a foundation of understanding of hazardous materials management, construction safety, OSH safety training and accident investigation, for workplace safety and health standards. The Occupational Safety and Health specialist implements mandated health and safety regulations in an effort to control occupational accidents and diseases, property losses and injuries due to unsafe working conditions. The scope of this position includes the identification of physical hazards and the design and implementation of remediation, the evaluation of potential toxic agent risk to the employer, the development of safety management and employee training/management programs. The demand for occupational safety and health specialists has grown over the past 10 years. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, federal, state and local government job growth will continue through 2022.

Program Learning Outcomes:

   Upon completion of the Certificate of Achievement in Occupational Safety and Health, students are able to design programs to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, radiological, and biological agents or ergonomic factors as well as prepare an emergency response plan.

The Biology Program provides a diverse array of educational opportunities to meet the needs of our community. Academic pathways are available for students seeking transfer to four-year institutions, an AA degree in Biology, an AA degree in Biology: Allied Health, pre-nursing and pre-dental hygiene program preparation, or pre-professional coursework (e.g., medicine, pharmacy, radiology, optometry, paramedic, veterinary). Additionally, the program offers courses required for various AA/AS degrees and certificates (e.g., Horticulture, Kinesiology, Psychology, Viticulture/Enology), and to meet general education requirements.

The Biology UC Pathway Certificate of Achievement is designed to prepare students for a seamless transfer into a biology major at a University of California campus. The certificate also provides entry-level opportunities for laboratory technicians in the industry and the academic environment. The coursework provides foundational knowledge and hands-on experiences across all levels of biology, from the molecular to the ecological.

- Upon completion of a Certificate of Achievement in Biology UC Pathway, students are able to explain and apply basic principles and processes of biology at different levels, from the biochemical to the ecological.

The Computers and Music certificate provides students with the foundation for developing standalone music software as well as composing and performing music using computer-coding languages. Students learn how to analyze and meet the needs of users of creative and musical software. Students who complete this certificate are prepared for entry-level work in software development for creative users.

The certificate in Library Information Technology is designed for those already holding academic degrees (Associate or higher) who seek paraprofessional employment or advancement in a library or related information service agency; or those seeking an introduction to libraries and information services in anticipation of further study in library science.

The course of study includes instruction in library organization and services; standard reference materials; supervision; computer applications; the acquisition, processing, and cataloging of print and non-print materials, legal, medical and business resources, and practical experience in a library or resource center. Students are encouraged to augment study with courses from other college departments such as office systems, visual media design, or computer networking and communications technologies.

Library support staff are taking on greater responsibilities in all types of libraries. Students should assume entry-level library work early in their studies although there are opportunities to advance within library systems. Those who complete the curriculum may find advantages in civil service with federal, state, county, and city agencies.

The Certificate of Achievement in LALS is a program that introduces the Latino/a experience in the United States. The certificate is comprised of a 3-unit core course combined with elective units, providing students with theoretical and methodological tools to understand and analyze the complexity of Latino/a lives in the United State. It is designed for students who wish to pursue a specialization in Latino/a studies and for professionals in the public, private and nonprofit sector and/or who work with or wish to learn about Latino/a communities in the United States to further their career goals.

The Certificate of Achievement in Photography is designed to prepare students for employment in the field of professional photography. The program will give students the technical and creative skills needed to pursue a career in the field of photography. Upon completion of the certificate, students will be able to work as entry-level professional photographers.

   - Upon completion of the Certificate of Achievement in Photography, students are able to appropriately visualize and accurately construct lighting designs utilizing artificial studio lighting and natural, available light in film and digital photographs.

   - Upon completion of the Certificate of Achievement in Photography, students are able to appropriately visualize and produce entry-level professional, commercial, and fine art photographs that represent fully developed concepts of form, medium and content.

The Labor and Community Organizing Certificate of Achievement prepares students for leadership and employment with labor organizations, workers centers, community-based organizations and nonprofit groups. Automotive technicians are in high demand in California and throughout the U.S., but there is a lack of trained professionals to meet this demand. This shortage of well-trained technicians has been caused by advances in computerized engine controls, evolving emissions regulations, and development of alternative technologies driven by the ever-escalating cost of fuel. The Las Positas College Automotive Technology program can provide the skills necessary to qualify as trained entry level technicians, as well as for career advancement. Students work side by side and hands-on with industry professionals in a fully equipped and up-to-date facility.

The Automotive Smog Technician Certifi cate of Achievement will provide the skills necessary for students to qualify as trained entrylevel technicians, as well as for career advancement. This program focuses on the rules and regulations of the California Smog Program and will prepare student to gain their California Smog licenses. This programs focus is on the diagnosis and repair of smog controlled vehicles in California.
