The Certificate of Accomplishment in Advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) Oral Communication Skills prepares non-native English speakers to participate in academic and professional settings. Students gain skills in analyzing and synthesizing complex texts to participate in oral discourse and speaking with fluency and accuracy. It provides students, employers, and others with documented evidence of persistence and academic accomplishment in listening and speaking in academic and professional environments.

Courses in this area provide students with an introduction to the field of public education and practical experience in literacy, curriculum planning, and classroom assessment. Courses include field placement in classrooms under the supervision of an experienced mentor teacher.

Skills Certificates are an acknowledgement that the student has attained a specified set of competencies within an occupational program. Skills Certificates may be part of a “ladder” of skills, beginning with job entry skills and leading to a full Certificate of Achievement program or may constitute a skill set that enables a student to upgrade or advance in an existing career. Skills Certificates require less than 18 units and are shorter in duration than the Certificates of Achievement. The Education Certificate indicates that the student has successfully completed foundation coursework in education, teaching and learning, and has gained experience working as a volunteer in a K-12 classroom.

This program provides the opportunity for the development of basic entry-level skills necessary for employment in a clinical/medical office environment. In a rapidly growing profession, medical assistants work directly with physicians and other health care personnel as team members in providing patient services. Medical assistants perform a variety of clinical, laboratory, and administrative functions in physicians’ offices, medical clinics, laboratories, and specific hospital departments.

The program is offered only at the Indian Valley Campus. Students may elect to complete an Associate in Science degree, or a Certificate of Achievement: Administrative and Clinical, Administrative, or Clinical. The Certificate of Achievement options require a minimum of two semesters to complete. Students may take courses on a part-time basis.

The Certificate of Achievement is awarded for completion of the program requirements as shown in the following list. Please note that program courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.

The Humanities Certificate of Achievement promotes an interdisciplinary understanding of broad trends in the arts and aesthetics, religion, and intellectual history. A sound understanding of the cultural and spiritual foundations of the modern world is in high demand in careers that require interpersonal and intercultural skills. This applies to education, the arts, and graphic design as well as the legal, political, public relations, tech, and consulting fields.

The Creative Writing Certificate of Achievement is interdisciplinary, allowing students to major or minor in creative writing and develop skills that support careers in publishing, editing, web-editing, and nonprofit organizations in the arts/arts education.

CCSF’s English major offers a wide variety of language, literature, and writing courses--GE transferable units--to serve students with diverse goals, including transfer to UC, CSU, or other four-year colleges. English majors will be able to complete most or all of their lower division preparation at CCSF before they transfer but should see a counselor confirm their program of study. By taking units of Core Reading and Composition Courses, students will learn techniques to produce clear, precise prose by integrating writing, reading, and research. The required units of Core Surveys of literature in English will ensure students have a broad familiarity with different eras of literary history; an additional requirement of Specialized Literature Courses provides students with an opportunity for more focused study. If students anticipate careers in law, education, communication, writing, government, advertising, or business, the English major should serve them well.

A student who has an Early Childhood Education Core Skills Certificate has completed 9-12 of the units required for the next level of certificate, the Certificate of Achievement in Early Childhood Education. A student who has completed the required courses for the Early Childhood Education Core Skills Certificate has met the coursework requirements of the Department of Social Services to be a teacher in a Title 22 preschool or children’s center. Upon completion of the Early Childhood Education Core Skills Certificate a student would be eligible to apply for the Associate Teacher level of the Child Development permit, issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

The Early Childhood Education Program is designed to prepare students to become teachers or directors in children’s centers, nursery and preschools, prekindergartens, infant-toddler programs, employer-supported children’s centers, extended day-care or family day-care programs.

Upon completion of the Early Childhood Education Certificate of Achievement, a student would be academically eligible to apply for the Teacher level of the Child Development Permit issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. All students should consult a counselor.

The Welding Technology program provides students with training in oxy-acetylene cutting, AC/DC shielded metal arc welding, gouging, semi-automatic gas metal arc welding, flux core welding and tungsten inert gas welding. Training in the planning, layout, forming, joining, and fabrication of various shapes in light and heavy gauge metal and pipes is provided. Students will work on various projects throughout the time they are enrolled in the welding program.
