The Psychiatric Technician Program is a three-semester program designed to prepare qualified men and women to practice as psychiatric technicians. The program provides two approaches to learning; coursework is combined with practical application. Clinical training occurs in hospitals and health agencies. A certificate in Psychiatric Technician is granted by the college after completion of the program, and the student is eligible to take the examination for licensure. The academic subjects for both the Certificate and A.S. Degree are offered at Napa Valley College.

The Psychiatric Technician Fast-Track program is an apprenticeship program that is administered at Napa State Hospital.  Students in this program are registered as students at Napa Valley College but all coursework is completed at Napa State Hospital and the students work as apprentices at Napa State Hospital.  Admission to this program is not administered or processed by the college; students must apply via the Department of State Hospitals.  This program is a joint program with the Department of State Hospitals, the Joint Apprenticeship Committee of California, and Napa Valley College.

This program prepares students for employment in the machinist and/or toolmaking trade. The courses cover setting up and operating basic machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders. Computerized machine tool programming and operation is also included. Emphasis is placed on the manufacture of component machine parts, using the materials removal process for metals and plastics. The course of study also includes precision measuring skills, blueprint reading, cutting tool design, shop mathematics, and efficient and economical sequencing of machine tooling operations.

- Demonstrate good work and safety habits while using hand tools and power equipment.

- Perform basic machining operations on lathes, mills, surface grinders and drill presses.

The Certificate of Achievement in Spanish is designed to prepare students for varied career opportunities, become fluent in Spanish, and boost their speaking, writing and reading skills. The certificate may be completed in four semesters by taking the four-level Spanish 50-53 sequence. Similarly, the Certificate of Achievement is designed to prepare students to transfer to the California State University system because it is aligned with our Associate of Arts for Transfer Degree in Spanish and it would give students interested in Spanish who are unable to pursue the Associate Degree a certificate option. Possible career opportunities are varied and include, volunteer work or work as a tutor for students learning Spanish. Similarly, certificate earners may work with or for Spanish speaking individuals or groups within the community in educational and service related areas such as first responder emergency providers, fire, and hospital employees. In addition they may work in many service related fields and earn higher wages because they are bilingual in both oral and written skills and improve communication.

The Certificate of Achievement in American Sign Language is offered as preparation for developing linguistic competency in ASL and readiness for entering a formal interpreter training program. Similarly, it is designed to provide educational experiences at the lower division level with depth, breadth, and rigor to ensure that transfer students are well prepared to succeed in upper-division work in Sign Language. The specific courses that comprise the degree were selected to meet the lower-division requirements for transfer to the California State University System baccalaureate degree programs in Sign Language. There is a need for skilled, qualified Sign Language interpreters in educational and social service agencies in our region and this certificate gets you there!
