The course of study will cover all aspects of technology and horticultural study including hydroponics, aquaponics, organic substrate production, GIS/GPS, water and energy conservation, and computing and connecting technology tools and data streams on farm. Students will finish this certificate program better prepared for careers as precision agriculture technicians, greenhouse managers, hydroponic growers, farmers, ranch or operations managers, first-line supervisors for agriculture and horticulture industries, and biological technicians, among others. This program is designed for those wishing to go directly into employment in the agriculture and horticulture industries. The Landscape Horticulture Certificate of Achievement prepares students to become good horticulturists through the understanding of site-appropriate plant selection, correct plant identification, proper maintenance and pruning techniques, and the relationship between irrigation and the soil. Students will incorporate these skills into developing sustainable and aesthetically pleasing urban spaces, parks, and commercial and residential landscapes. 

 

Students study horticulture and soil science, plant materials, landscape design, landscape construction, landscape installation, pest management, irrigation design and installation, computer-aided design and with landscape design- build industry business practices.

 

The Cabrillo College Horticulture department has a large landscape containing Mediterranean and California Native plants that provides students with hands-on learning opportunities to observe, properly prune, and maintain plants adaptable to a California climate. Off-campus field trips provide additional opportunities for students to view California native plants in their native habitat and Mediterranean plants in established landscapes.

The Greenhouse and Nursery Management Certificate of Achievement prepares students to become good horticulturists through the understanding of the production of landscape ornamental plants, floriculture crops (potted flowering plants), and controlled environment agriculture. Students learn about the process of crop production through hands-on experience growing plants in the on-site Cabrillo College greenhouses and nurseries. Students explore controlled environment agriculture practices such as hydroponics, substrate production, aquaponics, and greenhouse environments. Students learn plant propagation, artificial media fertilizers, pest management, greenhouse design and operation, marketing, and sales. The General Horticulture and Crop Production Certificate of Achievement prepares students for a fast-paced career producing ornamental and edible plants in greenhouses, nurseries, vertical farms, and in-ground organic farms. Students gain hands-on experience in plant propagation, formulating and evaluating artificial media, fertilizer solutions, and observing the environmental conditions that influence plant and track growth and monitoring for pests.

 

Classes include greenhouse design and operation, crop production, hydroponic and substrate production, plant propagation, pest management, and irrigation design and installation. Students will also learn about greenhouse environmental controllers, lighting, fertigation systems, irrigation monitoring, and tracking plant growth. Additional classes include plant science and soil science and management. Students can focus on ornamental plants, nursery, greenhouse grown, or organic food production.

 

The certificate prepares for employment in floriculture and holiday crop production, the berry industry, hemp and cannabis production, wholesale landscape nursery production, indoor food systems, or organic food systems.

The Honors Scholar Certificate of Achievement is awarded to students in the Honors Transfer Program who complete 16 eligible units.  Honors Transfer Program students who complete the Honors Scholar Certificate of Achievement also earn that designation of Honors Scholar on their Cabrillo College transcript and are honored at graduation. They benefit from priority admission into the UCLA College of Letters and Sciences, UC Irvine, and Honors Transfer Council of California member colleges and universities.

 

The Honors Transfer Program serves high-potential, high-achieving students from all backgrounds, ages, and experiences who seek a challenging academic environment and wish to pursue excellence in their academic careers. Universities look for outstanding students who have done more than meet the minimum transfer requirements. As a result, universities actively pursue honors students. The Certificate of Completion in Basic Computer Literacy is awarded upon the successful completion of BUS 600, 605, and 610. This non-credit program is intended for individuals with limited or no technology skills to provide basic computer literacy to lead to

PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

This noncredit program will provide students with limited or no
technology skills an opportunity to learn/improve keyboarding skills, to learn and use computer terminology and concepts, and to develop basic computer application skills. Students will also learn to use email and the Internet. The program-level learning outcome is “Given a course or work assignment, a student will be able to use keyboarding skills and computer technology/applications to produce basic business documents, emails, and Internet searches.”


*There is a $10 Student Activities fee. However, there are no tuition fees because noncredit courses do not earn units/credits.

Practical and theoretical knowledge in basic maintenance techniques, plus the special requirements of either airframe and powerplant work. Upon satisfactory completion of the required courses, the student is eligible to take the Federal Aviation Administration written oral and practical examination for airframe and powerplant license.


The Airframe and Powerplant Maintenance Technician Certificate of Achievement can be obtained upon completion of the 62-unit
Airframe and Powerplant courses.


The Federal Aviation administration (FAA) requires 1150 hours (four full semesters) of instruction to complete the Airframe curriculum (An additional 750 hours, two full semesters for Airframe and Powerplant). All courses in the major must be completed with a minimum grade of C or a P if the course is taken on a Pass/No Pass basis.
