The Nursing Assistant Certificate of Proficiency prepares students for entry-level employment in the healthcare field. Nursing Assistants provide direct care to patients in residential, skilled nursing and hospice care facilities under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Completion of the Nursing Assistant courses provides eligibility for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) examination for the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). 

 

Career/Transfer Opportunities: The Certified Nursing Assistant is a member of the health care team who works under the LVN, RN or Physician. Employment opportunities for the Nursing Assistant include long-term care facilities, private duty, assisted living, adult day care facilities, pediatric sub-acute and mental health facilities. Home health aides work primarily in homes and as a visiting care provider (ie: hospice care or public health aide).

The Journalism program seeks to prepare students to enter the workforce in journalism and its related fields (such as public relations and advertising) and to offer opportunities to students making a career switch or needing to meet the changing technological demands of the field. The program also seeks to prepare students to transfer to four-year institutions as journalism majors and to train students to be media-literate members of the community.


Instruction is supplemented by hands-on experience working for the student newspaper, The Skyline View, and its online and social media accounts. Students in the program publish Viewpoint magazine in the spring. Students also attend local and regional conferences and have opportunities to pursue internships and jobs in the field.


The degree and certificate programs prepare the student for such careers as print, online and broadcast reporting, writing, and editing; technical writing; copyediting; social media management; marketing; advertising; public relations; and communications.


Note: A grade of C or better is required in all Journalism courses applied to the major for both the Associate Degree and the Certificate.

The goal of the Beginning ESL program is to offer students a variety of learning opportunities to gain proficiency in the English language, and achieve academic, career, and/or personal goals. Students earn this certificate by successfully completing a sequence of two core courses and one of three electives. The program offers two integrated skills core courses focusing on daily spoken and written communication at the beginning level. Elective courses in pronunciation, grammar, and study skills give students the ability to develop specific skills they find personally challenging. This program provides students with a means to prepare for more academic ESL coursework at the high-beginning level.

Engineers design and create the future. They use the principles of math, science, and engineering to design and build new products or to develop large-scale systems such as transportation systems or a water treatment plant. Engineering problems usually involve teams of people, so engineers must work well with others and communicate effectively. The Engineering Certificate is modeled after the statewide Engineering Transfer Preparation Certificate and offers four distinct engineering tracks. It is identical to the Engineering AS degree except all general education degree requirements is omitted.

 

In order to transfer to a four-year college or university, students who complete one of the certificate tracks will also have to complete the minimum admissions requirements for the intended transfer institution. Upon completion of the Engineering Certificate, students will possess the knowledge and skills required for upper-division coursework in Engineering.
