The Electrical Technology program provides leading-edge technical training that will prepare students for career opportunities in the electrical industry.

 

The curriculum offers technical training to acquire knowledge and skills related to the design and installation of electrical equipment, materials, devices, and lighting fixtures for the Building Construction Program. Hands-on laboratory experiments will offer the necessary experience for the safe use and operation of electrical hand and power tools. Technical training includes National Electrical Codes and standards. The program offers basic concepts and principles of electricity, machinery, and programming programmable logic controllers. Students will be instructed with state-of-the-art technology tests and measurement instruments.

 

Employment opportunities may include positions such as electrical assistant, electrical technician, maintenance technician, public utilities and sales representative, and engineering technician along with purchasing and project administrator.

 

A Certificate of Achievement is awarded upon completion of all required courses with a grade of C or better.

 

Program Outcomes

- Describe principles of Direct and Alternating current, Ohm’s law, and current/voltage/power laws both verbally and in writing.

- Demonstrate an installation of a residential branch circuit for a three-way switch.

- Differentiate and apply the proper selection of materials, tools, and test equipment for residential and commercial electrical installation and repairs.

- Demonstrate knowledge and skills required to perform basic apprentice-level electrician duties required by the National Electrical Code (NEC) for residential wiring.

Economics is a social science discipline concerned chiefly with the description, theory, and analysis of production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. Economics is concerned with rational consumers making choices under conditions of scarcity. Students will be introduced to concepts and tools of economic analysis including the theory of demand and supply, national income accounting, economic growth, and the business cycle. Students will have the ability to analyze fiscal, monetary, and trade policies. In addition, students will be introduced to the theory of consumer behavior, the theory of firms under various market structures, and the theory of resource markets. The Associate in Arts in Economics for the Transfer Degree is designed to prepare the student for seamlessly transferring to the CSU to earn a baccalaureate degree in economics and is designed to provide students a clear transfer pathway to the CSU and the completion of a baccalaureate degree, with guaranteed admission to a CSU to a similar major with junior standing, and the ability to complete their remaining requirements within 60 semesters or 90 quarter units.

 

Associate Degree for Transfer Requirements

- 60 semester or 90 quarter CSU-transferable units.

- the California State University-General Education-Breadth pattern (CSU GE-Breadth); or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC for CSU) pattern.

- a minimum of 20 semesters or 30 quarter units in the major or area of emphasis as determined by the community college district.

The Street Maintenance Technology program is designed primarily for those involved in public works maintenance operations. Asphaltic and concrete pavement, construction, plan reading, calculation of materials, state and municipal codes, report writing, and heavy equipment operation and maintenance are some of the skills required in this field. To meet the training needs of persons interested in becoming street maintenance workers, LATTC offers a Street Maintenance Associate degree and a Certificate of Achievement.

 

The street maintenance field has evolved into a broader category of workers. Workers in this arena are primarily employed by governmental agencies that perform maintenance operations on public highways and streets. Professionals in this field are involved at the ground level through upper-level management.

 

By fulfilling the program requirements, students will have the necessary knowledge and skills for a career as Street Services workers. Knowledge and skills will be mastered in the area of installation and maintenance of various types of street construction and material including asphalt and concrete. Students will also gain the supervisory skills needed to be promoted into management.
