Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (MFA)

Southern New Hampshire University

Online Only

Share your story with the world and let the power of storytelling take your career to new heights with an online Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing. As one of the only programs available that encourage a focus on genre fiction, our online MFA lets you hone your craft in an area specific to your strengths and interests. You'll also learn about the business side of creative writing, preparing you to market your work in the real world. While most MFA programs require a residency, Southern New Hampshire University's online MFA in Creative Writing can be completed entirely online, with no travel necessary.

"Traditional MFA programs, whether full-time or low residency, are out of reach for many writers," said Paul Witcover, associate dean of creative writing. "The SNHU online MFA was designed to make the MFA experience accessible to all fiction writers, opening the door to diverse voices excluded for too long from the literary conversation. Our program is dedicated to giving writers the tools to succeed on the page and beyond it."

Graduates leave the program with a completed and revised novel in the genre of their choice. And with the included certificates in either online teaching of writing or professional writing, you'll have the skills to support your writing career, no matter where it takes you.

Learn how to:

- Understand the business and technical sides of professional writing

- Navigate the publishing ecosystem, whether you intend to publish traditionally or via self-publishing

- Use social media to gain a following and build your brand

- Market your work to appeal to decision-makers

- Develop materials for book promotion

- Identify agents, editors, or other industry professionals who may guide you in a future publication

- Teach writing in a classroom setting

If you're looking to earn your Master of Fine Arts online, you've found the right program. Even though there are no residency requirements, you'll still interact frequently with other students and faculty members in asynchronous discussions, critique workshops and within our online writer's community, where students come together to share industry news, extend writing tips, and develop critique partnerships. While many traditional MFA programs shy away from genre fiction, SNHUs online MFA will support you in writing the novel or story collection of your choice. You'll study the craft of writing throughout the program, selecting novels for close study of the elements of writing, authorial techniques, genre conventions, and creative decisions.

"I liked MFA-514 (Advanced Studies in Genre Literature) best," said student Jamilla Geter. "It was a great look into the different genres. It really helped me narrow down what genre I wanted to write in."

There's more to a career in writing than perfecting your craft. You'll also learn about the publication process, helping you make informed decisions to get your work into readers' hands. That's why the online MFA program puts a strong focus on the practical skills you'll need to succeed. That was a major bonus for Tara Lynn Conrad '21. "A major selling point for me was the classes SNHU offered on the business side of writing," she said. "That was something none of the other schools offered."

That practical side made much more sense to Felicia Warden '20 once she was in these classes like MKT-635: Websites and Search Engine Marketing/Search Engine Optimization.

"Though it was not writing exactly, its connection to it especially in our digital world was made clear almost immediately," she said. "Writing is not just providing content of value to your readers, but also creating avenues of access so those readers can find your content. This course helped me to understand that and to learn how I can create those avenues."

Besides allowing you to focus on your own creative interests, part of our 48-credit online MFA curriculum requires you to choose from 2 certificate offerings designed to round out your education and better prepare you for a multitude of writing-related careers. The first choice is a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching of Writing, which is tailored to those who see themselves teaching in an online classroom setting as a supplement to their writing careers. Students practice approaches to editing and coaching, learn how to establish a virtual instructor presence, and cultivate methods for supporting and engaging students within online writing communities.

Learn more about the online teaching of writing graduate certificates. Students can also choose the Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing, which highlights the technical and business opportunities available to writers. Students will develop a range of skills, such as copywriting, social media, marketing principles, and/or content generation, learning many of the freelancing skills integral to today's project-driven economy. Learn more about the professional writing graduate certificate. All of our courses are taught by accomplished authors and industry professionals who know both the craft and business of creative writing. They will work closely with you to develop both your creative and professional skill sets.

"All instructors within my program were extremely knowledgeable and helpful," Warden said. "I learned a lot about the different career paths my instructors chose. ... The course instruction, along with their anecdotal experiences, helped in offering knowledge in different areas of our field."

MFA Program Thesis The thesis for the Online MFA in Creative Writing is expected to be a novel-length work of fiction in a genre of your choice. The program focuses on novel-length storytelling, and while we read and celebrate short stories, it is expected that your thesis will be a novel (or a novel-in-stories with a unified narrative arc). Every Southern New Hampshire University online MFA student graduates from the program with a revised fiction manuscript in the genre of their choice, which is completed in a 3-course thesis series.

Throughout your tenure in the program, you can either work on a singular idea that you will develop during the 3 thesis courses, or you can begin a new project for your thesis. It is expected that prior to beginning your thesis courses, you have 15,000 words of your thesis complete (either through prior coursework, independent work, or a mix of both). You'll build on that 15,000-word count in Thesis I and Thesis II, and then revise your manuscript during Thesis III. Your thesis instructor will deliver a final edit letter to graduates directly upon the program completion, after which you can decide what level of revision you will complete before pursuing publication.

"My three thesis classes for the MFA degree were the most helpful," said Kathleen Harris '21. "I was actually writing a book as my thesis, so it was both enjoyable and advantageous for the degree. And it was the end of a very long milestone of accomplishments."

"Scenario-based learning provides learners the ability to practice using what they learn and apply it to a real-world scenario of a likely business problem," said Dr. Mark Hobson, senior associate dean of business at Southern New Hampshire University. "It will appear in every course. It places the learner inside a novel experience with learning tools and an instructor who acts as a coach and mentor."

Of the 10 classes that make up the online master in supply chain management MBA program, the business core makes up 7 of your courses. The program's coursework revised in 2021 can help you understand how to attract buyers of all demographics and use your expertise to meet business marketing objectives. With an overhaul in 2021, the online MBA program has features that can benefit all business students. The marketing MBA program is now made up of 7 core classes and 3 concentration classes allowing you to finish your program in about a year should you attend full time. In your business core, you'll study topics like leadership, strategy, and innovation. But unlike other MBA programs out there, all topics are weaved throughout the courses so that more business practices come together at once giving you an efficient MBA experience.

With the MBA program, one course you as a marketer might be particularly interested in is the Optimizing Brands class. Here, you'll learn how to balance brand management with impactful marketing strategies. You'll also study the key brand elements of identity, trust, and building habit-forming brand experiences. Throughout the course, you'll get hands-on experience as you develop a marketing strategy for an organization, applying skills you're building like market research, target market identification, customer trends in the marketplace, and ethical considerations. You then have 3 concentration courses in your program. Each explores a different area of marketing, helping you build a toolkit of skills you can successfully apply in the real world:

-Promotions Management addresses the specific activities involved in managing an advertising campaign, including research, media selection, copywriting, layouts, and the role of ad agencies.

- Consumer Behavior and Marketing investigates psychological, sociological, economic, and anthropological influences both theoretical and research-based. Applying these principles, you'll then learn how to design effective marketing strategies and ultimately a fully-fleshed marketing plan.

- Brand Management helps you develop an understanding of the theories, models, and strategies that enable an organization to achieve its branding goals. Through a combination of text and current research publications, students will be exposed to current and emerging brand theories and models.

For Michael Krupa 20, the Brand Management course functioned as a perfect capstone to the MBA in Marketing. "Brand Management was the class that stood out to me the most," Krupa said. "The course taught me so much about the various levels of branding, what a brand truly is and how it is so much more than a logo and colors."

"The assignments and hands-on learning format, he said, helped him connect the dots and extract deeper meaning from the material. "While the readings, discussions, and assignments were exciting, my instructor was also engaging," Krupa said. "Ultimately, I learned that successful branding can truly define the personality and unique identity of an organization."

Should you be interested in learning even more about marketing beyond your MBA, you could also pursue a graduate certificate beyond the standard degree program. This allows you to list another significant credential on your resume with minimal additional coursework. If you chose to earn your marketing graduate certificate, you could enhance your marketing know-how and add an additional credential to your resume with just 2 extra courses.

Human Resources MBA

Southern New Hampshire University

Online Only

A human resources concentration built into an MBA? That's the type of degree that can fit well into your career-advancement goals. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Human Resources at Southern New Hampshire University prepares you to take on this increasingly important role. And because it's an MBA, its approach to the HR discipline is to enhance your business acumen first and foremost, along with your ability to drive change. The program lays a foundation in standard business administration topics, weaving topics like leadership, marketing, finance, and operations throughout your coursework. But with the curriculum revised in 2021, you'll dive into them in different ways. For example, you won't just learn about leadership, you'll learn how to lead people, organizations, and organizational change. The new MBA program also allows you to move through your core coursework faster, even giving you the ability to finish in about a year should you choose to take part full-time.

"Everything is business as you progress up the ranks of leadership, said Kate Noor, an MBA academic advisor at SNHU.

Learn how to:

- Lead and operate within cross-functional teams by effectively navigating the complexities of HR management

- Analyze and interpret data for decision-making

- Develop and foster adaptable strategies for an organization

- Evaluate and implement various models and processes in the design and continuous improvement of organizations and their practices

- Cultivate globally aware and culturally responsive teams and organizations

- Create and implement plans around culture, ethical and legal standards, and sustainable practices

As with all of our HR programs, the MBA in Human Resources aligns with SHRM guiding principle that human resource professionals must be prepared to play a key role in the success of today's agile companies. SHRM is considered the industry standard in HR credentialing. The coursework was designed to include competencies found in the SHRM Book of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK), which forms the basis for SHRM-issued HR credentialing opportunities. The SHRM BoCK covers the 8 behavioral competencies and HR knowledge human resources professionals need to do their best work.

Melanie Rowe 18G says her MBA in HR prepared her on many levels. "The classes at SNHU have taught me a lot about change management, people management, group dynamics, company culture, and leadership," she said. "I've used this knowledge in my relationship management and to position myself as an informal leader, which makes it easier for me to recommend and implement change. The business world needs well-educated human resource professionals more than ever."

SNHU's MBA in Human Resources online was designed to expand your expertise on a wide range of human resource management topics. Like all of our online MBA programs, it explores today's most relevant themes, including ethics and corporate social responsibility. And because it's an online program, it allows you to build relationships with a diverse group of students while enhancing the soft skills that are so essential to success in business.

"An MBA is great for those in a traditional business setting, but every industry has room for an MBA in some capacity. What you learn is beyond just crunching numbers," said SNHU academic advisor Kate Noor.

The MBA in HR consists of 7 core MBA courses and 3 human resource courses. Depending on your academic background, you may need to supplement the core courses with business foundation coursework. However, those with a bachelor's in business administration, human resources, or a related area may be able to waive one or more foundations and jump into the core more quickly.

Melanie Rowe 18G offers a strong rationale for pursuing her MBA in human resource management online at SNHU. "As a director, it's important to have a good business foundation in addition to expertise in your field," she said. "SNHUs MBA program allows me to take the core business classes I need to be a director in addition to the HR classes I would take if I was just pursuing a master's degree in HR."

The MBA in HR program follows the same structure as our other MBA programs, allowing you to:

- Earn credentials embedded throughout the program. Not only gain a master's degree but build up your resume along the way with industry-recognized certifications.

- Take part in scenario-based learning. Using both disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge, as well as creative thinking and problem-solving skills, you'll participate in interactive scenarios that provide you with real-world experience.

- Participate in a flex learning pathway. You'll get more fluidity in assignment due dates. Some even span across multiple modules. The MBA human resource management concentration stresses the strategic nature of the HR role.

You'll learn how the HR system helps drive the overall organizational mission and see its impact from both a human resource and business perspective. Broad themes include:

- Strategic decision-making

- Market-driven connectivity

- Human resources technology

- Recruitment and hiring

- Compensation and benefits

The human resource courses that make up SNHUs concentration align with the guiding principles of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the industry standard in HR credentialing. Coursework emphasizes competencies in the SHRM Book of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK), which forms the basis for SHRM credentials.

As you progress through the MBA in HR program, you may take these 3 concentration courses:

- Strategic Human Resource Management: Examine key regulatory procedures and human resource requirements as they apply to organizations. Analyze the strategic role of the HR manager in recruitment, hiring, training, career development, and other functions within the organizational setting.

- Total Rewards: Examine the impact of compensation and benefits within the organizational structure to design a compensation and benefits program. Topics include job analysis, surveys, wage scales, incentives, benefits, human resource information systems (HRIS), and pay delivery administration.

- Leading Change: Discover the various techniques and strategies used to effect systematic change and transform organizations. Coursework integrates Kotter's processes for leading change, organizational development, and transformation theory and practice, emphasizing the use of teams as a key change factor.

"As you complete your MBA in Human Resources concentration courses, you'll learn to lead and operate within cross-functional teams by effectively navigating the complexities of HR management. HR is complex because it has a lot of different variables to it," said Deborah Gogliettino, SNHUs associate dean for human resources. "It's not something you can wing. You have to know the business plus employment laws, federal and state. You answer questions every day in your work."

Rowe works for a nonprofit and believes it's important to have a good business foundation in addition to expertise in your field. "She most enjoys working in compliance, because she likes being involved in the action. Compliance lets me get involved in every department in the organization," she said. "I get to learn how everything functions, help fix things that aren't working and ensure that our process and programs are supporting the organization's sustainability."

SNHU also offers a graduate certificate in human resource management, which MBA in HR students can take as a standalone or fold into their program with minimal additional courses. Taking advantage of this opportunity lets you walk away with not one but two in-demand credentials. Together, these two credentials provide robust competency in multiple areas of business as well as HR an ideal way to increase your knowledge, skills, and marketability.

Don't have a business background? No problem. Our MBA is accessible to everyone. Interested students must have a conferred undergraduate degree for acceptance, but it can be in any field. Those without an undergraduate degree in business or a related field may be asked to complete up to 2 foundation courses to get started. These foundations cover essential business skill sets and can be used to satisfy elective requirements for the general-track MBA. With foundations, the maximum length of your online MBA would be 36 credits.

Attend full-time or part-time. Students in the MBA have the option to enroll full-time (at 2 classes per term) or part-time (with 1 class per term). Full-time students should be able to complete the program in about 1 year, while part-time students could finish in about 2 years. Our students are busy, often juggling jobs, family, and other obligations, so you may want to work with your academic advisor to identify the course plan that works for you. The good news is, you can switch from full-time to part-time and back again as often as you want.

It's possible, with Southern New Hampshire University's Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Healthcare Management. Healthcare is growing and it's growing fast. The skills you'll learn in the MBA in Healthcare Management program help prepare you to transition into or excel in leadership roles in hospitals, clinics, medical offices, healthcare corporations, insurance, and pharmaceuticals. And you'll get the hands-on experience you need through your participation in scenario-based learning, giving you the problem-solving experience you need to succeed. Our 10-course program can help you excel at managing the day-to-day intricacies of major organizations, including healthcare systems, as well as develop the skills to think critically, fix programs and undertake strategic planning. And the updated curriculum was also designed to help you succeed throughout the program: With more fluidity in assignment due dates, some of your assignments will now span multiple modules.

Learn how to:

- Lead and operate within cross-functional teams by effectively navigating the complexities of healthcare management

Should you want to focus more on healthcare, SNHU also offers a Master's in Healthcare Administration and a Master's in Management with a concentration in Healthcare. The subject-matter experts at Southern New Hampshire University have turned the traditional online MBA into a program that lets you practice the skills you'll need to lead healthcare while you're studying them. Revised in 2021, the major courses have been trimmed down to 7 core courses in broad discipline areas, weaving critical cross-cutting business themes throughout each class. Within your classes, you'll have the opportunity to participate in scenario-based learning projects. Solving a problem on your own or with a group, you'll need to apply critical and creative thinking, as well as problem-solving skills, in a real-world context.

"The new program is more centered around creating the kinds of deliverables, including analyses and reports, that will be expected from an MBA in real-world practice," said Dr. Andrew Gallion, an adjunct instructor who contributed to the updated MBA curriculum. "While the exercises are academic, their application is absolutely based on actual scenarios in industry, and the resulting work products are measured against industry standards."

What's more, built into the courses are teachings that position you to earn industry-recognized credentials throughout the length of your program. That way, you're earning more resume-building skills even before you get your degree.

In addition to gaining a solid foundation in business management in your core classes, earning your MBA in Healthcare online can also expand your understanding of:

- Social, ethical, and organizational challenges faced by healthcare workers and how to effectively handle these challenges

- Introducing and managing clinical information systems and their effects on patients and interdisciplinary teams

- Current trends in healthcare informatics practices and how technology can improve patient care

- Healthcare industry trends, including quality care initiatives, population health management, medical law and ethics, and other current topics

Healthcare administrators support policies and processes for the delivery of care and services that impact our patient populations, said Dr. Toni Clayton, associate dean of healthcare professions at Southern New Hampshire University. It requires leaders to apply healthcare principles and methodologies as they manage people and processes."

The MBA in Healthcare Management online program may include classes like:

- Healthcare Informatics: Dive deep into the history and current state of healthcare, as well as how the industry uses information systems to improve patient care.

- Topics in Health Administration: Develop organizational processes and structures using the total quality management (TQM) approach to deliver health services.

- Social & Organizational Issues in Healthcare: Study change management strategies, including the impact of introducing or enhancing clinical information systems and the effect of these systems on patients and on interdisciplinary teams within the healthcare setting.

"These courses, combined with the business curriculum, help students to expand business management theories and methodologies to a focus on healthcare delivery systems," Clayton said.

The healthcare concentration was designed to provide a solid understanding of business as it relates to the healthcare industry. That's why Dr. Thomas Scott '15 returned to school for a health-based MBA. As he was promoted up the ranks and moved over to the business side, he realized more and more of the conversations he was having were business-focused.

"Which is when I realized I needed to get a business degree because a lot of the time I found myself sitting in meetings and not talking about medical stuff at all," Scott said. Now, said Scott, responsibilities like creating budgets are no longer a mysterious process. "It all makes perfect sense to me now," he said.
