An educational therapist is an educational professional who combines educational and therapeutic approaches for evaluation, remediation, case management, and communication/advocacy on behalf of children, adolescents and adults with learning disabilities or learning problems. The Certificate in Educational Therapy is aligned with the course requirements for associate-level membership in the Association of Educational Therapists (www.aetonline.org). Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Computer Applications in Schools (CAS)

The post-baccalaureate credit certificate program in Computer Applications in Schools is designed to prepare teachers to use computers in their classrooms and to take leadership roles in their schools. Those who complete the program will be prepared to teach students about computers; to incorporate computers in their instruction; to select and modify instructional software; to evaluate and select hardware; to create multimedia and hypermedia and to use computers to manage classrooms and schools. Completion of this credit certificate program requires 21 units in core and elective courses with a minimum B (3.0) average. Admission to the Program

In addition to University requirements for admission to graduate study, applicants must have:

  1. An earned baccalaureate degree from accredited institution of higher education with a 2.75 grade point average in the last 60 semester units attempted.
  2. Official transcripts.
  3. An application for formal admission to the program through the Division of Applied and Advanced Studies in Education.
  4. Complete 3 units of Pre/Co-requisite:  

    EDIT 4300 Information Technologies in the Classroom or 

    -CIS 1200 Information and Technology Literacy or

    -CS 1200 Living in a Technology-Based World

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Clinical Laboratory Science

A licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) performs the full spectrum of diagnostic tests in hospital clinical laboratories, commercial reference laboratories, or in research and development for biotech companies. The Cal State LA CLS Training Program consists of two components, a didactic component and a clinical practical training component. The CLS Training Program provides both didactic and practical clinical training in hematology, clinical chemistry, blood banking, microbiology and immunology to prepare students to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathology Medical Laboratory Scientist certification exam. Passage of this exam is required to obtain a California license as a CLS. A CLS license is required to work as a CLS in California. Eligibility to take the exam requires a full academic year of clinical training for 52 weeks, 4 days/week, 8 hours/day as well as one 8-hour day/week of face-to-face classes (19 units in total distributed over 3 terms of which one has 7 units and two have 6 units each). Clinical Training Affiliates for the CLS program have been approved by California Laboratory Field Services.

 

The Post-baccalaureate Certificate Program in Clinical Laboratory Science is the didactic component of the Cal State LA CLS Training Program. The lecture courses required for this program are offered through the College of Extended Studies and International Programs in Special Sessions to students accepted into the Post-baccalaureate CLS Training Program. The program has been approved as a Gainful Employment Program by the Department of Education. This means that eligible trainees can apply for Federal Financial Aid to support them during the year that they are in the program.

 

The courses required in this certificate program provide students with the technical knowledge, critical thinking, and management skills needed to pass the American Society for Clinical Pathologists certification exam for Medical Laboratory Scientists. All students admitted to the program must have obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology or related sciences, and have completed the following required courses: inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, hematology, medical microbiology, and physics.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Clinical Genetic Molecular Biology Science

A licensed Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist (CGMBS) performs specialized molecular diagnostic tests in hospital clinical laboratories, in commercial reference laboratories, or in research and development for biotech companies. The Cal State LA CGMBS Training Program consists of two components, a didactic component, and a clinical training component. The CGMBS Training Program provides both didactic and practical clinical training in molecular testing for cancers, genetic disease markers, histocompatibility types, and some infectious diseases to prepare students to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathology Technologists in Molecular Biology certification exam. Passage of this exam is required to obtain a California license as a CGMBS. A CGMBS license is required to work as a CGMBS in California. Eligibility to take the exam requires a full academic year of clinical training for 52 weeks, 4 days/week, 8 hours/day as well as one 6-hour day/week of face-to-face classes (2 terms of 6 units each). Clinical Training Affiliates for the CGMBS program have been approved by California Laboratory Field Services.

The Certificate in Clinical Counseling is designed to provide additional training in professional clinical counseling to students in the M.S. in Counseling option in the Rehabilitation Counseling program at Cal State LA.

With close interactions and partnerships between Cal State LA and local biotechnology companies, students of this program will experience a broad industry-responsive curriculum taught by academic and industrial experts, extensive hands-on biotechnology laboratory skills training, and a focused summer biotechnology industry internship at the end of the academic year. All of these are designed to prepare and facilitate our students for employment and career advancement in the biotechnology sector. Courses taken to fulfill certificate requirements may also be applied toward the Master of Science degree in biology.
