A Certificate of Achievement can be earned upon completion of the 18.5-unit major. All courses in the major must be completed with a minimum grade of C or a P if taken on a Pass/No Pass basis.  While units in this program are transferable to other institutions, students should contact a counselor for more information.

The Associate in Science can be obtained by completing the 23-unit major, General Education, and electives as needed to complete a minimum of 60 units. This program of study was developed to assist students who desire to advance as a firefighter, or to those looking to pursue a career in the fire service field as a non-safety employee that does not require a FF1 Academy. Upon completion of the certificate, the student may become eligible for a career as a Fire Inspector or Fire Prevention Specialist. The additional completion of a general education pathway leads to the Associate degree and will aid existing firefighters in promoting/advancing through the ranks of engineer, captain, battalion chief, etc. Some fire departments require an associate degree before a captain can take the promotional exam for battalion chief.


The Certificate of Achievement can be obtained upon completion of the 18-unit major. Completion of this program provides active firefighter promotional opportunities as well as a pathway to a 4-year degree.
