The Accounting Certificate of Achievement is designed for students who wish to learn how to develop, create, and maintain an accounting process and systems for a business organization. Courses required for this certificate help students develop skills for creating, managing, and maintaining accounting records and financial statements of a business organization.

Meditation and mindfulness has been practiced for millenniums within various religions, cultural philosophies and traditional medicine. In the United States, it has become more mainstream with research substantiating numerous beneficial effects for well-being, physical, and mental health. We will explore various types and practices of meditation, their history, principles of practice in both traditional and contemporary medicine, as well as associated research. Knowledge of various techniques from multiple perspectives and values translates into a sense of awareness, reducing anxiety and stress, improving health, wisdom, introspection, a deeper sense of relaxation and well-being essential for a greater appreciation for life and adaptability.

Meditation develops mindful awareness that assists in cultivating many qualities and abilities as kindness, compassion, empathy, authentic speech, insight, focus, love, joy, inner peace, and happiness among others. By empowering and inspiring individuals with a variety of practices of meditation allows for personal choice and alignment with living optimally. The practice of meditation and skills learned can be used to facilitate meditation personally, individually, with a group, in a class and/or within the community. Ultimately, taking care of ourselves transforms the root of stress, a precursor to many chronic diseases, in our daily lives and our society.

Aromatherapy is one of many therapies that fall under the umbrella of holistic/integrative health and wellness. Essential oils have gained credibility through continued research supporting their effectiveness from self-care to healthcare as an integrated treatment modality because aromatherapy is simple, safe, effective and inexpensive. This certificate is the first tier introducing skills and knowledge for safe and effective use of essential oils for health and wellness. We will discuss the historical and traditional uses, safety and toxicity issues, indications, contraindications, quality, purity, physiological mechanisms, therapeutic benefits, critique the scientific evidence regarding their therapeutic qualities, chemical classifications, blending and an overview of business, ethics and laws. This certificate is ideally suited for individuals maintaining and/or expanding skill sets, licensed/certified professionals to curious lifelong learners interested in the therapeutic benefits of essential oils.

The Certificate of Achievement in IGETC for STEM (CSU) will be awarded upon completion of the IGETC for STEM (CSU) general education requirements as outlined on the catalog year's IGETC for STEM (CSU) general education worksheet. Students must complete a minimum of 33 units, which are distributed among five areas. Per state requirements, the IGETC for STEM (CSU) general education option is available to students earning an Associate Degree for Transfer in Biology and/or Environmental Science only. This certificate recognizes the completion of lower-division general education STEM requirements for the CSU.

Note: The IGETC for STEM (CSU) allows students to defer six (6) units of general education courses from the 37-39 unit IGETC pattern. Students completing the IGETC for STEM (CSU) pattern may defer one course from Area C and one course from Area D until after transfer. Before transfer, these deferred lower-division transfer courses must be replaced with calculus and/or major science courses required by the major.

The Certificate of Achievement in Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) will be awarded upon completion of the IGETC (UC) requirements as outlined in the catalog year's IGETC certification sheet. Students must complete a minimum of 34 - 36 units, which are distributed among six areas. IGETC (UC) requirements are designed to be taken with a major area of concentration and elective courses in preparation for transfer to a University of California campus. This certificate recognizes the completion of lower division general education requirements for IGETC (UC).

Students must complete a minimum of 39 units, which are distributed among six areas.CSU-GE Certification requirements are designed to be taken with a major area of concentration and elective courses in preparation for transfer to a California State University. This certificate recognizes the completion of lower-division general education requirements for the CSU.

Students completing this program will be able to:

Completion of this Certificate provides students with the knowledge and skills to analyze, test, troubleshoot, secure (cybersecurity) and evaluate existing network systems, such as local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), and Internet systems or a segment of a network system. Students also learn how to perform network maintenance to ensure networks operate correctly with minimal interruption by designing, implementing, managing, and troubleshooting current industry equipment in real world scenarios. The program's focus is on direct employment skills and knowledge as a foundation in small to medium scale network infrastructure. An Associate Degree is also available. The Certificate and Associate Degree are focused on developing entry-level careers and updating existing careers.

A Certificate of Accomplishment may be awarded upon the successful completion of three noncredit courses. Students are encouraged to pursue these courses in advance of entry to a credit program or as an individualized pursuit of a career in art, self-enrichment, or for engagement in community service.

Career Opportunities

Students with skills in the fundamentals of art may enter degree programs to pursue multiple careers in the field of art or gain skills to enhance job opportunities with local art venues, and professional artists, or seek independent opportunities in conjunction with local labs such as the College of Alameda FABLAB.

The pursuit of fine art is a central component of education and healthy societies. The artist’s concern for truth, beauty and form is a bridge to the well-being of individuals within communities. The College of Alameda Art Department encourages the growth of student expression. A student who successfully completes the designed course sequence in art will be eligible for a Certificate of Achievement as a Practitioner of Fine Art.
