The Digital Photography Certificate of Achievement is for students who would like to create commercial photography images and videos utilizing digital photographic and video practices. This certificate is designed for students who would like to pursue a specialization in digital photography to work in the private, public, or non-profit setting such as in commercial photography, digital technician assistant, photo lab management, photo-retouching, photo-editing, design, video production or editing, photography for design, or documentary or photojournalism photography.  Art Photography is a multidisciplinary educational experience, and the program emphasizes lecture courses along with hands-on studio experiences in Cabrillo’s photography lab.  This program provides a foundation to transition to an associates degree, to join the workforce for entry level jobs in commercial photography or videography, or as a continuing education skill for use in a current photography, video, or design career.

The Certificate of Achievement in Conversational Cantonese provides students, prospective employers, and others with documented evidence of persistence and academic achievement in Conversational Cantonese at an intermediate level.

Learning Outcomes

The Cinema Arts Studies Certificate of Achievement is designed for students who would like to write, produce, or direct films or videos for marketing, education, or entertainment. This certificate is a multidisciplinary educational experience and the program emphasizes lecture and critical analysis film courses to inform creative decision-making for careers in the film and video industry. Students will build the foundation of knowledge they need to successfully transfer to a four-year institution, join the workforce for entry-level jobs such as a writer, producer, director, or production assistant, or upskill through continuing film/video education pathways.

✔ Research, plan, direct, and produce or oversee cinematic film or video pieces for diverse forms of presentation.

✔ Conduct a critical analysis of cinema history and theory in order to compare techniques used in contemporary films or emerging digital media.

This Certificate of Achievement in Inclusive Education offers students an initial pathway to a career in Early Childhood or K-12 Special Education. The coursework builds skills for general and special education teachers to understand the strengths and challenges of children with special needs and to describe inclusive strategies to respond to them. The coursework prepares students to work with students with special needs in a range of settings in both general education and special education environments. Taken together, the courses complete educational requirements for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Child Development Permit and satisfy the core licensing requirements required by the Department of Social Services Community Care Licensing. The Certificate of Achievement will be granted upon successful completion of the required number of units of coursework.

The Black and White Technical Photography Certificate of Completion is a noncredit certificate designed to give the knowledge needed to incorporate black and white photography into the photographer's visual communication practice. Black and white technical photography skills are taught including camera operation, film processing, darkroom printing, and refined exposure methods. Hands-on demonstrations, peer critique, darkroom laboratory work, and field studies make the courses in this certificate ideal for those photographers interested in adding film photography practices to their career skills in advertising, wedding, portrait, architecture, and landscape photography or for photo technician occupational training.  May be offered in a distance-learning format.

Students learn professional image capture techniques through camera operations and settings, the use of light, and composition techniques. This noncredit certificate of completion provides an affordable option that prepares students to work as creative professionals, photographers, business or non-profit social media support staff, or designers.

The Basic Photoshop for Photography Certificate of Completion is a noncredit certificate designed to prepare students for commercial photography professions. Opportunities for learning professional image editing software tools and techniques are provided through the creative integration of photographic content and design principles. This noncredit certificate of completion provides an affordable option that prepares students to work as creative professionals, photographers, designers, and/or image editors.

The Advanced Photography and Visual Media Certificate of Completion is noncredit certificate designed to prepare students to produce image-based stories utilizing photography, video, audio, and text. Topics include analysis of historical and contemporary narrative forms and research in ethical practices in the documentation of a subject’s personal experiences, ideas, and feelings that consider the subject’s well-being, dignity, and safety.

Opportunities for learning advanced photography skills for professional photographic and/or multimedia practice are provided through interactive activities with classmates as well as through reflection and analyses of creative work. Covers digital imaging tools and software used in the production of image-based narrative content and practical in marketing, entertainment, and/or fine art applications. Adaptable to Macintosh or Windows. Students may use either film or digital cameras.  Courses prepare students to work in commercial photography and/or visual multimedia content creation in occupations such as photographer, image-editor, videographer, or multi-media creation for small business or in professional teams across creative visual disciplines.  May be offered in a distance-learning format.

The Digital Fabrication and Art Making Certificate of Achievement prepares students with the knowledge and skills to join the workforce as problem solvers, innovators, and inventors who are able to think logically and communicate effectively. Students gain job skills in step-by-step processes, production, design thinking, collaboration, perseverance, marketing, and brand development.

Digital fabrication begins with design including drawing and 3D modeling. Students learn to use software and hardware to bring ideas to life. The program uses a variety of hands-on techniques as well as industry software such as computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) to create a virtual object and rapidly prototype it. With digital fabrication knowledge, students will be able to create, modify, and adapt through the rapid prototyping and iterative design process. Students will utilize a variety of equipment and tools in the Cabrillo College Makerspace and FabLab including 3D printing and scanning, laser cutting and engraving, digital knife, water jet cutting, and other Computer Numerical Control (CNC) equipment.

The Creative Careers Certificate of Completion is a noncredit certificate designed to explore methods of creating self-directed, non-traditional, and entrepreneurial pathways in the visual, applied, and performing arts. Creative skills taught include design thinking, innovation, and collaborative teamwork. Business skills include tools to succeed in new business ventures and/or self-promotion through social media. Students gain skills to start a new business venture in the arts, connect creativity with solutions for nonprofits and causes, and upskill for project planning. May be offered in a distance-learning format.
